Cinerarias prefer a temperate climate. In cooler areas, treat as a summer annual or winter flowering indoor plant. They like shade in summer but require more light in winter. Plant in humus-rich, cool, moist, well-drained soil. Indoors, watering is very important. These plants are sensitive to fluctuations in watering, overwatering causes root rot and waterlogging reduces flowering. They need plenty of moisture, but don't wet the leaves. The soil should be well drained. Go cooler and give the plants bright, filtered light.

Some gems — especially those with lavender or purple petals — even have a scent. The smallest roses, called micromen, bloom less than an inch wide.
