An Unpopular Opinion
Hi, I'm relatively new to Steem.
Have been a lurker for a long time and only just started posting content recently.
One thing i knew to expect on Steem was a large crypro community. What i didn't take into account is that this also means there is a large anarchist community here.
That's right, I fall on almost the complete opposite side of the economic coin.
Now if you've seen my posts before you'll probably know that I'm from Australia.
Australia is an interesting country economically speaking where we tread the fine line between capitalism and socialism.
We get taxxed enough that you can get treated medically for free and have discounted perscriptions, and free public schooling. But not taxxed enough to have enough money put into our hospitals to avoid waiting lists months long or enough money put into our roads to remove the necessity for tolls.
Now growing up in this country means I've been able to see the benefits to both sides. I've seen people with the right idea going from rags to riches, creating jobs, etc etc.
On the other side, me and my family grew up on the bread line so to speak. We were often on the dole (government assisted living) we had to move further and further away from metro areas to be able to afford to have a roof over our heads. But the more isolated we became, the less jobs there were available. It's a vicious cycle.
I remember years seeing my mum cry because she had to choose between being able to keep the lights on or being able to give her children something resembling a christmas. Feeling guilty for never taking us to the dentist, or to get our eyes tested, or putting us (my sister and I) in a good school, having to treat lemonade icypoles like a major treat, feeling guilty for always having to say no to extracurricular activities outside of school like dance lessons or music lessons because they couldn't afford the lessons let alone the instruments/outfits/gear etc needed to support it. The list goes on.
Growing up in this is the reason why i am a socialist. It's all too easy for someone to slip between the cracks and be forgotten and neglected.
I would happily give up 50% of my wage if i knew a family under hard times was able afford asthma or diabetic medication for their child. Happily be taxed if university was subsidised/free. Happily give up a lot of my wage if public transport was free, if the homeless had a means of having a roof over their head, a bed to sleep in and a means of showering and cleaning their clothes.
Lady luck is not always kind, but i believe in living in a world where should your home be set on fire with no insurance, your car in the garage blew up in the fire, your parents died in the fire and inheritance left the house and land to your selfish older sibling who refuses to let you stay with them, your credit be stolen and your workplace make you redundant and you just find out that you have cancer, and any other horrible thing that happens to someone somewhere everyday... That the worst case scenario is you sleep in a share room in a hostel whilst you get medical treatment and get back on your feet.
Now i know that a higher tax rate does not equal a higher quality of life. Hell Finland is one of the top with quality of life but one of the lower with tax but THAT is where government comes into play.
As most believe that church and state should be seperate i also believe state and tax should be seperate.
I wish instead of just voting for who ever runs the country we could instead vote on what our taxes went towards. Federal, state and local. 50% of our tax would go into bare necessities; roads and infrustructure, emergency services and skeleton crew of national defence. The other half we get to vote what proportions of it go where.
This way the decisions on law and legislation would be seperate and unrelated to where our taxes went so that big money corporations in things like oil, coal, pharmacy, guns, banks etc would barely have anymore say in the running of the country than anyone else.
But since these dreams are unlikely to ever occur. The best i can hope for is to be taxxed more so that Lady Luck has little to no say on the safety net of the down trodden.
I guess it depends ... I know women (yes more then one) who actually work as breeding mares and pop those kids out to get support and if you think they spend that money on their kids....guess again.
I once tried explaining to a child at work why schooling can be important. His reply was: I wont do anything, I will be on social support like my father, so I don't need this school.
Oh the stories I could tell ... and so yes. I can get people beeing pissed about the system. You work every day so that at the end someone who doesn't want to work gets a nice place to live, monthly rations and montly support on the bank. It simply can't fly. Poeple will get angry.
There isn't just people who had bad luck...
Its all to easy for someone to find those cracks and milk em.
These reasons are the reasons I have no sympathy for people who are on the dole who complain about the hoops they have to jump to get support.
I whole heartedly support the work for the dole scheme back when it was a thing. Make it a pain in the arse to get and KEEP the support so that working an actual job IS a favourable outcome.
Put in place the assistance bank cards that only allow you to buy necessities and not be able to get out cash to use on alcohol/cigarettes/gambling/drugs.
Make it as painful as possible to use the system long term. But DO make it accessible and livable for those who DO need it. Because those who DO need it, won't have any qualms in jumping whatever hoops are needed.
If you want to know about hoops, today I went to my appointment. After the hour, I was asked to write down what I applied for on paper, then directed to find out the numbers and write them down so they can advocate for me. I wasn't allowed to note the 14 roles I applied for yesterday, but had to apply for other roles outside my skillset just for the sake of it. Once that was done, they asked me to stay around for another hour to chat with a other consultant, but I had to leave because I had to prep for another interview. They refused to believe me and asked for the number so they could verify. I refused because I won't be treated with suspicion or called a liar. They said I was on the dole, so had nothing better to do. When I said I was leaving, they advised that if I left, they would suspend my payments, and did, despite attending and doing all the things I'm required to do. Now I gotta spend two hours or so on the phone to sort it out.
Interestingly, a lot of ancaps came from socialism, perhaps as many as conservatism.
@careywedler was a huge Obama fan, for instance.

STOPI'm with you on the voting for how tax is spent. Like you say though, it ain't going to happen. I ha d no problem paying for what I use, but I don't like paying for what I don't use and I don't agree with (wars).
Sadly, no socialist system ever works long term, because greed and power lust always comes into play eventually. Even the Scandinavian countries are starting to show cracks, apparently and they are usually held up as the best example of it.
As for the people living in poverty, I think charities often do a better job of supporting them than government.
Hi @ursa am new here so plzzz vote and follow back
