Is The 15:17 Train to Paris worth watching?

in #hbo5 years ago (edited)

Every month I publish lists about what's coming to the most important streaming sites in the IP Address Guide. I have just published my list on what's coming to HBO in July 2019, and as I published a similar list about June 2019, I noticed the movie The 15:17 Train to Paris on the list.

Little did I know about the movie back then, but as I saw the trailer, I remembered the actual story upon which the movie is based. A train leaves from Amsterdam to Paris in August 2019 and a terrorist gets on the train. He has more than 300 bullets and a gun. Luckily his plans didn't succeed, because on the train some American soldiers were present who managed to stop him before he got to kill anyone at all. And yes, that is what the movie is all about.

I looked forward to watching the movie, but I have got to agree with most of the critics out there when it comes to the actual quality of the movie. It was directed by Clint Eastwood, and I believe that he did a good job. The only problem is the material itself.

If Clint Eastwood wanted to stay true to the original story, then there wasn't much stuff to fill the movie with. As a result, we got to learn more about the childhood of our characters and what lead their paths to that actual train-ride from Amsterdam to Paris. Unfortunately, their background wasn't the most interesting, but that is also what makes this movie so special. We get to follow three totally normal guys with normal lives. They do their tasks, they join the military, have a boring time in the military, and then they go for a roundtrip in Europe with the European railway system. Accidentally they end up on that given train between Amsterdam and Paris, and suddenly they ended up as heroes, and no longer could they be considered "normal" people. Or, maybe they should now be considered normal people who did something exceptional? This is what makes the movie both inspiring and boring at the same time.

The movie itself was, in other words, quite boring - but I do not regret spending 90 minutes watching it. It is always inspiring to see when a normal person becomes a hero, simply because they stood up and made a difference at a certain point in their life.

The 15:17 Train to Paris score: 5,5/10

Have you seen the movie? Did you enjoy it? Are you planning to watch it? I would love to hear your thoughts about the movie.
