Holy Goalie review

A family member recently told me that the movie Holy Goalie is an amazing movie and that it is really funny. The movie can be streamed in a lot of Netflix regions and thus I used the opportunity to stream it on the biggest and most popular streaming platform yesterday.

Holy Goalie isn't a Hollywood movie, and thus you will have to enjoy the subtitles to understand what is happening in the movie (if you don't understand Spanish). I sometimes find this to be refreshing because things are often portrayed and can be seen in a different way when a movie has its origins in another country.

Holy Goalie is the football version of Sister Act 2

I didn't really think about this for a while, but almost halfway into the movie I understood it... this is Sister Act 2, only in football version. I guess you get the point if you have seen Sister Act 2? A monastery is in trouble and it is going to be made into a hotel. A half-way criminal guy is sent there (instead of being excommunicated from the Catholic church) and he finds a solution to the problem... he needs to create an awesome football team from the priests in the community. The best team will play against the Vatican team in Rome, and a victory could mean a new opportunity for their property to remain.

The methods used are not traditional methods, but they seem to succeed! This is a funny movie and it also has a romantic story intertwined into it as one of the priests (who is preparing to become one) has a crush on a girl in the city (and it seems to be true the other way around as well).

My thoughts on Holy Goalie

My family members told me that this was incredibly amusing. Well, maybe I got my expectations up way too much because I didn't find it to be exceptionally funny. And to be honest, I'd rather watch Sister Act 2 once more than Holy Goalie (probably because I enjoy the music a lot), but this wasn't a bad movie at all. If you like movies originating from outside Hollywood that can be streamed on all sorts of Netflix regions, this might be a fantastic pick for you!
