Do I need a different Netflix subscription if I travel to another country?

in #netflix5 years ago

If you have a subscription to a magazine in one country, you will not be entitled to the same magazine if you go abroad. If you have an Amazon Prime subscription in the USA, it doesn't mean that you will get access to the Amazon Prime in England if you visit London. But, what's up with Netflix? Do I need a new Netflix subscription if I travel to another country?

Netflix is a streaming service available in almost all the nations on earth. It is very obvious, that many people want to watch Netflix when they are out traveling. But, do you need a second subscription in that given country, or can you use your existing Netflix subscription?

A very important question

The question isn't interesting only for those who love to travel. It is also an interesting question for those who want to change their Netflix region. I frequently write articles about how you can change your Netflix region to American Netflix, Canadian Netflix, UK Netflix, and other large countries. The solution is normally to use a VPN provider that isn't banned by Netflix to get access to such regions. But, do you need a second Netflix subscription in order to do so?

Only ONE Netflix subscription is needed

Now, this is a great thing, but you do not need more than one subscription to Netflix. It doesn't matter where you want to stream Netflix if you have a subscription somewhere, that is enough. If you have a running Netflix subscription in your home country (let us say it is France), you can just as easily visit Netflix.com as you visit South-Africa to watch Netflix. The only difference is that you will get access to whatever is available on Netflix in South-Africa. This is due to licensing rights, as the local distributors in every nation make their own deals with Netflix, and thus there are big differences between the countries of the world related to what can actually be streamed on Netflix.

Netflix regulations in the EU

A new set of regulations were set out in the EU during the spring of 2018. These regulations meant that people could get access to their home Netflix region, as long as they travel within the EU. In other words, if you have a French subscription and travel to Spain, you will still only see what is available on French Netflix. If you travel to Sweden, you will still see the French catalog. But, if you leave the EU, you will get to see the local catalog of that given nation. If you have a Netflix subscription in a non-EU country, you will always get to see the content of the nation you are currently in!
