Rant About Modern Pokemon
Please Allow me to Rant about the Modern Pokemon.
I Still Think Pokemon Needs a Reboot.
While I do think Pokemon NEEDS a Complete Reboot and that it has Lost its Charm. I am Still a Fan of the Series, and I cant wait to see what the Future has in store for the Series.
I'm not Against the Shift from the Pokemon themselves to a Focus on Story and Characters, It was Kinda Needed to do that because eventually the Focus on Just the Pokemon would get VERY old.
I do have a Few Problems, The Characters are Poorly Developed, and The Battle System is Rather Boring Nowadays and Fails to Keep Me engaged, I think Game Freak is Trying too Hard to Make Battles interesting and Engaging with the Additions of Mega Evolutions and Z-Moves
Mega Evolutions are a Great Idea on Paper. It Could have Given Weaker Pokemon Purpose to use on a Team, but NOPE, They just Give Megas to the Popular Choices. While they did give Megas to some Weaker Pokemon like Beedrill and Pidgeot, Most of them are Popular Pokemon Like Lucario, Garchomp, and Tyranatar, Just to Name a Few, and Like does Mewtwo and Rayquaza NEED a Mega? NO! AND FOR THE LOVE OF GOD, WHY DOES CHARIZARD AND MEWTWO HAVE 2 MEGAS? Like those Two were Popular Enough.
Z-Moves I Mostly Have no Problems with, only with the Names and animations for very few of them. Z-Moves are Much Easier to Balance then Megas and Honestly, Z-Moves fits the Series more then Megas(in my Opinion). though being Rarely able to use 2 Z-Moves in US & UM's Single Player Leaves a Bad Taste in my Mouth.
The Stories they could Tell, while are not Awful, Fail to Develop Characters During the Main Quest, Which is a big NO-NO for and RPG Like Pokemon.
And is it me or is the Community getting more and more toxic?
Honestly, I think Pokemon Needs a Reboot. What I want to see is the Genre to Change from a Turn-Based RPG to an Action RPG. Kinda Like the Tales Series.
While I dont think this will Solve all of the Problems, It will be a Start, For once it would be Nice to see something Different from the Gameplay, Different Enough to Spark My interest.
The only Reasons why I dont think This will happen is because A. The Old Battle system is so popular and is played Competitively. and B. Nintendo Already has an Action RPG Series in the form of the Xenoblade Series.
But Problem A can be Fixed by having a Turn-Based RPG Spin-off series with the old Battle System but that's just me, Hell they could do my idea the other way around. Which I will have no Problems with.
Im sorry for the Rant. I Recently Had an Argument with another Fan about the Future of the Series and Yea. I'm still a Little Mad about that Argument.

I know very little about the gaming part of Pokemon. My experience with these characters is seeing them as cute little toys. I have to agree even without seeing this particular game firsthand that the adding of a plot rather than just over and over attacks would add new life to it. And I hear you re: character development as well.
If you want to see some great animation, check out some of the classic cartoons from Disney, Warner Brothers, Hanna Barbara, King Features, Merrie Melodies, etc.
From what your mom has said, I believe that you would be easily-capable of creating games with this level of animation (or close enough).
Finally, if the Pokemon community is becoming more toxic, it's definitely time to re-boot.
I haven't played US or UM but I have played Sun and I was really looking forward to it, as it was my first Pokemon since Blue/Red and Gold/Silver (The old ones). Well I hve to say, I was a bit shocked and disappointed by Sun/Moon. While it was a solid game I got the feeling that all the new Pokemon were more or less ugly exept some. Also I can just agree that the character development etc. somehow is not that great in my eyes. They really could make much more out of it, making it a really great RPG.
As you said a reboot with a new battle system: I like the turn based one but I could imagen also a more action non turn based or half turn based one. Have you played Ni No Kuni? Something like the battle system there would maybe fit.
I've never played the game with cards or Pokemon go, and never collected the cards. However, I did really enjoy watching the old show when I was kid. My brother was really into collecting the cards (first gen) years ago, and had several books. He recently gifted these books to my 8 year old who is really into Pokemon now. My son loves showing these books of "Vintage Pokemon" as he calls them to his friends. This really really cracks me up lol.
