First Impressions: Pokken Tournament/DX

in #gaming9 years ago

Today im going to go Over my First Impressions and Thoughts on Pokken Tournament (also Known as Pokken in Japan, and Pokemon Tekken in Germany).

Wii U cover art used in all regions

When Pokkén was first teased in August 2013, I was Skeptical but Excited to see what it had to offer, There are many Concepts of a Pokemon fighting Game so many myself included were excited to see how good it was.

After a while, the game was not Released till July 2015 in Japan...In Arcades. with a Wii-U Port in the West a year later. Strangely, Japan did not Recive the Wii-U port, and instead they were locked to the Arcade till 2017 when the Switch Port, Pokken Tournament DX, was released.

But before we go to the Switch Port, let go back to the Arcade Port.

The Arcade Version eventually got some DLC characters that Players can buy in the Arcade and save to a Memory Card, that they can plug into the Pokken Machine and Play that character. Of course, The Wii-U version did not Recive this DLC and Western Players had to Wait for the Switch Port in Order to Play these new Characters.

The Switch Port Allowed Players to Play with Players worldwide(which was not a thing in the Wii-U or Arcade Versions), it had the Arcade's DLC right from the Get go, and Finally it even Added a new Character that was not in the Arcade Version, the Generation 7 Pokemon Decidueye.

When I bought my Switch a Few Days ago I also Bought Pokken Tournament DX with it. so I thought I would give out my Initial Impressions.

You may think, Based on the Game's title that its just Tekken with a Pokemon Skin Right? Ha Ha, WRONG. Pokken is Kinda Like a Mixture of Traditional 2D fighting Games and the Newer 3D fighting games with it's Main Mechanic, Phase Switching. There are two Phases, Field Phase, which Played like a 3D Fighter, and Duel Phase, Which plays like a 2D Fighter. These two Phases even Changes a Pokemon's Moveset as well, so you have to pay attention to what phase you are in as some Fighters are better in Field Phase, Like Darkrai, while others are better in Duel Phase, like Scizor. the Movesets and Blocking are more Simplified, its Clear to me that Pokken was Designed to be someone's First Fighting Game, while being interesting enough on it's own.

thats enough on the Gameplay, lets move on to other stuff

So, First off is the Tutorial Mode. This Tutorial is one of the most well made Tutorials for a Fighting game I have ever seen, it Goes into Detail about all of a Pokemon's attacks, and Combos, with the ability for the Player to Try them out for themselves in an Easy Fashion.

The Singleplayer Campaign is pretty Easy. a Bit too Easy for my Taste but whatever, its a fighting game so what did you expect?

The Story is....there, nothing Special. its not very good either. but it works...I guess.

Finally the Playable Characters themselves are really well Balanced, so its kinda hard to Even Make Tier lists for these guys. its not a perfect Balanced, but each fighter can hold their own against pretty much any other Character.

So Overall, I thought this game is pretty Fun, and I Recommend it if you are new to Fighting Games, if you are Experienced, you Might get a Kick out of it, and obviously if you are a Hardcore pokemon fan.

Thats it. see you all later
