GoodWill or BadWill?
Is Goodwill Good or Is Goodwill Will Bad?
So I know i will get people who disagree with me, and that is fine.... That is your opinion. But lets talk facts. Goodwill is one of the top "non-profit" organizations out there. Everyone knows who Goodwill is. The question then remains why does the CEO make so much money if it is considered non-profit.
"Michael Miller, CEO of Goodwill, earns $856,043. Goodwill uses donations to train people for jobs who are currently unemployed. After being ridiculed by the Oregon Department of Justice for an “unreasonable” salary, Miller continues with compensation surpassing $850,000. During Miller’s time at Goodwill, he has increased revenue up to 107 percent to a record $135.5 million, while adding 1,000 jobs since 2004. The number of people served through Goodwill has increased from 11,694 to 52,170 during Miller’s leadership, perhaps proving the benefit of well-paid charity CEOs"
Now as the statement above from Smarty Cents States, Goodwill does do good things. But i still find it a tad hard to believe that a company that is considered non-profit, would pay their CEO that much money! To top it off as was mentioned here " Some employees earn just 22 cents per hour." So again the question is, is Goodwill the company everyone thinks they are.
According to that same article "Last year, a former Goodwill executive was sentenced to 70 months in prison for embezzling $1million from MERS/Missouri Goodwill Industries Inc."
GoodwillRetail Store
I personally know that the items I use to donate to Goodwill would end up in their retail store and priced outrageously. That is when i stop going to goodwill and supporting the company.. too many times the stuff does not get back to the people who actually need it.
What To Do Differently.
So our company after ever sale, sticks boxes of clothes and blankets and everything that the homeless and people less fortunate need out back four warehouse. Either that or we donate to charities we know will go back to the people. Catholic Charities, Habitat For humanity, Donation centers like that. There is a church in our home town that gives out everything to the homeless for free. We love donation to them.
Now i am not saying Goodwill doesn't do great things, but the fact they pay some of their employees so little, and the CEIs make so much.. The fact that the prices are so high at their retail store and only a small portion of the money they make goes back to the communities... All these and many more are the reason i don't use Goodwill. i would ask you to do your research and really look up how Goodwill operates before donating to them. Find small charities in your home town that you know will go back to the people!!
God Bless and Have a Great Week!

I don't support Goodwill because of their slave wages. I don't support Salvation Army because of their rabid anti-gay people stance. As far as I know, ARC and DAV are ok, but usually a thrift store bin is my last stop when finding things a new home. I give things away on Freecycle or NextDoor or Facebook, I put books in Little Free Libraries, I gave dishes to Food Not Bombs, I gave clothes to a lady that distributes things to various clothing banks and homeless shelters, etc. It takes more time, but usually there are smaller, genuinely-helpful places you can take things. Then, if I can't find a home for some things, what's left goes in a charity bin (ARC or some such).
Goodwill and ARC have giant rag businesses in Europe. They are really for-profit companies that pretend to do good things. Keep up they healthy skepticism.
I agree here in the US they should be considered for profit.. thanks for reading the article and outing your thoughts in on it
