Five of the Lesser Known Cannabinoids
Medical marijuana has been garnering a lot of attention lately for its incredible healing properties. But where do those properties actually come from? Most people are already familiar wit THC and CBD, considered to be the primary cannabinoids. But science is finding that cannabis' ability to heal comes not just from individual cannabinoids, from a complex interaction of the 100 plus cannabinoids we have identified so far. So what are some of these lesser known cannabinoids and what effects do they have on the body?
CBDV – cannabidivarin** is another lesser known cannabinoid that may have profound medical implications. Scientists have been working with CBDV as an anti-convulsant and have found that the effects have been significant when provided to rats and mice. Just like other cannabinoids, CBDV alone was not effective alone. But when supplemented with traditional anti-seizure medications, it amply increased their effectiveness. CBDV may play an enormous role in he future of epilepsy research and treatment.
THCV - Tetrahydrocannabivarin* is a unique cannabinoid whose structure closely resembles that of THC. Ever get the munchies after getting? Sure most of us do. But have you ever smoked a strain that seemed to kill your appetite completely? That was because of high levels of THCV. Due to its appetite suppressing nature, researchers are looking to see if THCV may offer a safe and effective solution for weight loss. Medically it is believed to reduce anxiety, which is good for those who suffer from panic attacks. And while the science is still being developed, it is believed that THCV can help with the tremors associated with Alzheimer's Disease, and also works to regulate blood sugar.
CBG – Cannabigerol*** has shown to demonstrate antimicrobial and anti-fungal properties. When combined with CBD, it is also found to enhance the medicinal effects of the CBD. CBG was tested along with CBD on the MRSA virus. It was more powerful in killing the virus than similar cannabinoids. And when combined found to be even more effective. Other potential uses include skin treatments, and possible pain relief.
CBC – Cannanichromene**** is the third most prevalent cannabinoid found in marijuana. While being an effective pain reliever, CBC is also known to have strong anti-inflammatory properties. A recent study shows that it had great effectiveness in reducing inflammation in the intestine, which could have amazing implications for those suffering from Crohn's Disease. Besides inhibiting the growth of cancer cells in mice, CBC is also showing to stimulate bone growth. The medical potential of CBC, at this moment, makes it one of the more promising cannabinoids in the field.
CBN – Cannabinol^ is what you get when THC breaks down in dried cannabis. Old leftover bud is typically ripe with CBN. CBN is good for stimulating appetite, often a problem experienced by cancer patients undergoing chemotherapy. It has anti-fungal properties, and can ease inflammation, however, its biggest contribution to medicine is its ability to ease the symptoms associated with neural diseases like ALS. One of the things that marijuana has always been joked about is its ability to ease glaucoma related pressure. Well turns out it's true and CBN is most likely responsible.
