Electronic Voting Machine (EVM)
Electronic Voting Machine (EVM)
Nowadays, Electronic Voting Machines are used to register and tabulate votes, which come with different levels of usability, security, efficiency and accuracy. (Some systems may not be accessible to voters with certain disabilities.)
In 1838, the Chartists – who proposed universal suffrage and secret ballot system – brought up the first major proposal for the use of voting machines.
EVMs Used In India Since 1989
In India, the EVMs — comprising a Balloting Unit (BU) and a Control Unit (CU), and recently, Voter Verifiable Paper Audit Trail (VVPAT) — are currently manufactured only by Electronics Corp of India Ltd (ECIL) in Hyderabad and Bharat Electronics Ltd (BEL) in Bengaluru.
Right to Information (RTI) activist Manoranjan S Roy, of Mumbai, raises doubts about India's EVMs in the conduct of free, fair and credible elections. He pointed out the mismatch in numbers of machines from producers and buyers, and insecure transportation, etc.
According to Roy, the discrepancies affect "the very foundation of the Indian democracy and its election system".
