Halitrephes maasi: Real Life Deep Sea Fireworks !
I wasn't planning to post something today since I am still busy trying to get all fat and drunk. But EVNautilus, my favorite channel on youtube, just released a new amazing video that fits my strange animal wall perfectly and also gives me the chance to make a quick post :D
So, the guys from EVNautilus decided to start the year with a jelly that literally looks like deep sea fireworks!
Enjoy:
The amazing creature you just saw is scientifically described as Halitrephes maasi and was filmed at 1225 m in the Revillagigedo Archipelago off Baja California, Mexico. In case you wonder, the creature is not bio-luminescent:
"Radial canals that move nutrients through the jelly's bell form a starburst pattern that reflects the lights of ROV Hercules with bright splashes of yellow and pink--but without our lights this gelatinous beauty drifts unseen in the dark." [source]
In case this is the first time you hear about EV-Nautilus, it is a research vessel exploring the oceans of our planet and seeking out new discoveries in all kinds of fields, including biology, geology, archaeology etc. At the moment it is based in Victoria, British Columbia and is operated by the Ocean Exploration Trust under the direction of Dr. Robert Ballard, the man who is known for finding the wreck of the Titanic and the German battleship Bismarck.
If you enjoyed the video in this post, I highly suggest you to check this post of mine from 4 months ago with the top 25 weirdest animals the EV Nautilus has recorded in my opinion in the deep blue. Also, make sure to subscribe on their channel on youtube and check their official website. If you feel generous you might also want to donate a couple of bucks to the project. :)
And if you wanna be part of the crew, travel the seas and witness the wonders of the deep blue then make sure to click here and see how you can join their crew!
See ya tomorrow!

Even 1% of additional taxes for underwater exploration would be worth having more of photos/ videos like this
Although taxation is theft, I agree, that would be a great use of tax money :D
Hehe sometimes being lazy feels good. Great post my friend.
Thank you :D
Crowdsourced citizen science. I dig it. Thanks for posting!
And thank you for reading my friend :D
Amazing is the fact that underwater creatures are abound in such large number that new ones are discovered almost everyday.
As much as i would love to see these creatures, i am so afraid of the water.
Nice post.. Happy new year
well most of the scary creatures live in great depths so you have nothing to worry about :P Thank you for reading and happy new year :D
