Can Plants Grow In A Maze? (Unboxing)

in #science7 years ago (edited)

Today I went out to buy gifts and stuff for friends and family. And like the big boy I am, I couldn't resist from spending some bucks on some cool toys FOR MYSELF that I think would make every 5-year-old out there happy. So, I got myself two "STEM" gifts, first this "Grow In A Maze" kit:

Then this "POKIBOT" robot thing:

And then this cheap ass drone from LIDL that costed only 25 euro, I guess it's gonna be useful for training before I go and buy a more expensive one:

So in this post I will do a quick unboxing & review of the grow in a maze kit. First, a little about the concept.

As the box says, the kit allows you to build a maze and then look your plants as they grow inside and finally exit it. But how can they find the exit? How is that possible? Well, let's be honest, the only explanation that actually makes sense is magic.

But according to the "science" as explained in the instructions, this is thanks to a phenomenon called phototropism. Here's a very detailed wikipedia page about the phenomenon with everything you need to know. In short, phototropism is the growth of an organism which responds to a light stimulus. The plant simply follows the light as it grows and "finds" the exit. Another example of phototropism is the indoors plants that tend to "look" and grow on the side from where natural light comes in. I call BS, it's just magic.

In case you want to buy one, the kit costs 12$ on amazon which makes feel like a big dumbass since I paid 15 euros or about 18 $. So, if you pity me make sure to upvote this post so I can have my money back. Resteeming would be nice too. Hmmm...I should make a patreon too so that you subscribe and I buy stupid shit like that for free or even for a good profit. That would be awesome, don't ya think?!

Ok back to the kit now. Let's see some more photos. I have already shown the front side, so here's the backside:

Made in China. What a suprise!

And here's all the thingies inside the box:

Ok, let's build this shit:

Ooopps, I forgot the black "curtains" (thick black paper) which you can remove when you want to check the progress of your plants:

As you can see, there is even a magnifying glass to check the roots of your plants and a pipette to water them. A real steal if you ask me! In case you wonder about the quality, it feels like "cheap chinese plastic" but everything fits nicely so overall it's a steady structure. And you get extra plastic pieces for the maze in case you lose some.

I didn't have any beans to start the experiment but I will get a few and plant them tomorrow or something so expect an update in the coming days once they sprout.

Overall, I think this is a cool gift for small kids or for anyone else who enjoys gardening. Recommended.  :D

Try to have more stable your photograph when you shot indoor. A great tip to make it work is when you push the shutter hold your breath and have your elbow close and stable.

Thanks for the tips, too bad I am too lazy to care :(

so interesting!

I thought it said "grow a meze".

I must be hungry...

ελεος! XD

Poli wraio post... entiposiastika..

σε ευχαριστώ!

let's see how that goes :D

just put some beans to sprout :D

@trumpman you do understand I'm expecting progress updates on this plant right!? :)

Hehe first update is out!

and there will be one once those beans start to sprout!

It is an innovation that is what experimenting. Follow it up and maximise the potential benefits.
