Badger Buries an Entire Cow + Crab Amputates Its Own Claw Like a Boss

Here's a cool story a friend of mine send me today over facebook. So, the story took place early this year and involves a bunch of researchers in Utah who caught on video a badger burying its food.."So what?", I can hear you saying.. 

Well, the thing is that this particular badger buried a whole damn cow calf. Not surprisingly, it took it 5 whole days to bury the thing:

Although not very clear on the video, the badger actually used a really smart method to bury the animal. It made multiple tunnels beneath the carcass until everything eventually collapsed into a pit. Then, it covered the pit and even constructed a burrow for easy access. The budger then went inside the burrow and feasted on the meat for the next 11 days!

The badger was recorded as part of a research by Ethan Frehner of the University of Utah and his team. Purpose of the study was to essentially see what happens to carcasses if you go in the Great Basin Desert of Utah and randomly place them here and there. 

In total, they left seven dead calves and set up some cameras to record the types of scavengers that were about to party. A week later, doctoral candidate Evan Buechley visited the sites and saw that one carcass was missing. No carcass, no left over bones no nothing. His first thought was that a coyote or a mountain lion had dragged the body away but as we saw he couldn't be more wrong.

As the researchers noted in their paper, it's very common for badgers to bury food to protect it from other scavengers and/or to preserve for future consumption. But this was the first case ever reported of a badger burying something bigger than itself. 

So kids, if there is a lesson to learn from this story is be like the badger. Why throw your food when you can bury it and eat for days to come?
