Axelay Nintendo NES Port Tech Demo Released

in #dtube6 years ago (edited)

Axelay was one of those titles that Sega simply did not have anything to compare. Konami apparently did not have faith in the series either as only the lone Super Nintendo game was released - no sequels like Gradius received. Such a shame because the idea and execution of Axelay was impressive. Surely this dual genre game, side scrolling and overhead “into” the screen, shooter could not be done on the 8-bit Nintendo Entertainment System, right? Well, a fan developer has stated, “hold my adult beverage and watch this.”(html comment removed: more)

French developer upsilandre has created a tech demo showing that the original Nintendo NES could indeed have pulled off, at least some, of the effects that set Axelay apart. Mainly this tech demo shows the NES could do the more demanding looking “into” the screen scrolling that was so impressive that Konami didn’t even try to follow it up.

Our friends over at Nintendo Life have verified that this port of Axelay will run on an actual Nintendo Entertainment System via a flash cart. That is amazing because that means this game is legitimate 8-bit Nintendo NES programming at its heart and proves the NES could have done so much more than given credit for.

I have taken the ROM file for a spin, thanks to the developer releasing it. From my short experience with the game, I can say it is quite good. Controls are spot on and while there is not much to do other than shoot some rocks coming at you, it is still fun. I mean, come on, how cool is it that we can enjoy, some of, a port of Axelay for the Nintendo Entertainment System?

Do you know of a cool game port that we need to know about? Let me know in the comments and I will do my best to get it covered.
