Resident Evil Gets Fan Demake Release with Grim Beginnings for Nintendo Game Boy Color
While Capcom did attempt to bring Resident Evil to the Game Boy Color back in the early 2000’s, it was, well, it was released. Of course, porting the full-on PlayStation original was never seriously a consideration but what fans got missed the mark too. If you went into it disregarding the name and taking it as an action-adventure title it was good. If you went into it with all the lore of Resident Evil in your head, wanting to take on the undead on the go and get scared here and there, you were probably quite disappointed. Capturing the Essence
One thing that is interesting about Resident Evil Grim Beginnings is the way the original atmosphere is captured. Changing to an overhead view obviously removes a lot of potential jump scares but the unsettling nature of the mansion is still here in full force.
Things seem off in some rooms while in others it appears to be a normal room except for odd crates here and there. Something is clearly going on in this house and it is not right.
Can you solve the mystery of Resident Evil Grim Beginnings on Game Boy Color?
A Game About a Virus Developed During A Virus Pandemic
Resident Evil Grim Beginnings started development during the pandemic of 2020. The developer was stuck overseas and needed something to keep their mind off the situation of life at the time. Their choice of creating a game based on the original Resident Evil is quite a correlation to go with.
Currently sitting at Version 0.9, Resident Evil Grim Beginnings is clearly not finished. Grammy_Games claims the game is currently about two hours long and follows the plot of the original game, for the most part.
There are clearly liberties taken to change things up a bit.
Graphically, this fan game takes a similar view to Capcom’s attempt but uses a much more “Sweet Home” art style. Battles are similar as well, kind of a limitation of the hardware here rearing its head.
If going by graphics alone, I would say Capcom’s version is more “Metal Gear” in appearance while Grim Beginnings is more 8-Bit, Sweet Home, Mother/Earthbound, etc looking.
Fans of the franchise will probably just play both.
