No One Asked for this Remake of this 3DO Game
In the mid 1990’s a failed console, the 3DO, was inspiring developers to go new directions with their games. Any Channel, a team of developers, artists, musicians, from all over the world, came together over USENET and e-mail. Their goal was to get in on this 3DO console, probably due to its cheap license fees and very Macintosh centric hardware. The most interesting thing about PO’ed is probably how it came to be.
Distance Cannot Stop the Inevitable
Any Channel was a game developer that the members were nowhere near each other when they started developing their take on “expansive” Doom and Quake. The members used USENET and e-mail to communicate as they worked on PO’ed, only coming together for the first time at one of the gaming shows of the day.
Their unnamed first-person shooter (FPS) got its name when they saw the price of 3DO stock dropping. There are other tidbits in the coverage Gamefan Magazine gave PO’ed as it developed.
Time itself cannot kill PO’ed as Nightdive Studios are taking up the mantle in remaking this forgotten title from the 90’s.
Not a Classic but Had Its Charm
PO’ed is not a classic title. Take it from me, I was there, I owned a 3DO late in its life. I owned PO’ed and it was not great. It was a fun “gross out” game to pull out to show friends. Beyond that, it was not fun. First-person controls on a controller were not hammered out yet so simply getting through a level was a lesson in frustration.
From the looks of the gameplay video, some of the problems that plagued PO’ed on 3DO (I never played the PSOne version) are fixed here. The game appears to be frenetic and balls to the wall action. Most importantly, the game runs smooth and fast.
Personally, I would rather see Killing Time or Battlesport get a remake but I am willing to give this new version of PO’ed a chance.
