Classic Sega Saturn Game Recreated in Unity Engine

in #games5 years ago

The Sega Saturn was one of those consoles that was lost in general. Many mistakes were made that led up to the launch of the Saturn, many mistakes that caused insurmountable trouble for the console. That did not stop companies such as Sega from releasing some interesting games for it. One title that many wished would make a return is, kind of. A fan has used the popular Unity Engine to recreate a portion of Burning Rangers and it is stunning.

Capturing that Sega Saturn feel

YouTuber content creator, Andreas Scholl, has posted a game play video showing off his version of Burning Rangers using the Unity Engine. What is amazing here is just how close it appears to be to the Saturn original.

Seriously, look at it. This really looks like it was running on a newer version of hardware that has ties to the Saturn hardware.

According to Segabits.com, the look was accomplished by adjusting the vertex coloring of the shader and general light settings. Simply awesome.

What could this mean for the future?

Sega is known for being “slightly different” than companies such as Square Enix and Nintendo. Sega has a more lenient policy of working with fans than other companies. Hopefully this fanmake will fall under the “let it be” at worse.

What fanmake have you seen that you think others should check out? Tell me in the comments. Some of these are truly impressive works of gaming love. To get you started, here are some Unity Engine fanmakes we have covered so far.

Love this! I like how closer they want it to feel to the original despite Unity's power to do more!

It's nice to know that Sega will probably "let the game be" and not ask for the project closure like what another company would do.

There are a couple of instances with Sega where the freelance developer was literally brought on in an official capacity to work on games. Wild. There are also a few instances where Sega has been mean to the homebrew community so they are not perfect, just a lot cooler than other companies.

I am interested in seeing more stuff like this one though. It is awesome seeing what I call "Saturn HD" or something. It looks like Sega Saturn but with much better visuals. That is one thing Sega had in spades, a certain style and art direction that was unmatched. Sometimes they were misguided and off their rockers with choices but the feel and look of their games was unique.
