This Turtle Is Making Its Way To The Indian Ocean
Hello Steemians! Today I am taking you to the shore of the Indian Ocean, as I show you turtles making their way from nesting grounds on the beaches of Oman and into the water
In October I spent a few weeks travelling around Oman- if you are following me you may have seen a few of my posts already! - and the real highlight was having the opportunity to watch as turtles made their way from the beaches into the Indian Ocean after spending the night nesting. It was, truly, a once in a lifetime experience to be so close to nature, and my pictures hardly do the scene justice, but I will try to take you on the experience too.
The Turtles of Oman
Turtles use the beaches of Oman as nesting grounds throughout the year. I travelled to the beaches at a place known as Ras al Jinz, a small village south of the capital Muscat, where turtle sightings are guaranteed almost every day of the year.
The female turtles- from a number of different species- make their way onto the beaches here in the middle of the night, finding suitable nesting spots under cover of darkness before carving out of the sands deep, camouflaged nests to lay their eggs.
Early in the morning I travelled to the beach at Ras al Jinz with local guides from the local villages to try and spot the turtles making their way back into the Indian Ocean.
The local guides are all trained and educated to conserve and preserve the turtle population along the Omani coastline. This is one of the largest turtle nesting grounds in the world, and an important place for research, and education through sustainable, responsible tourism.
I was lucky to catch the last few turtles in the early hours of the morning. A few were still nesting, and these we left in peace, keeping our distance before watching from afar as they left the nests once the sun began to rise, to then make their way into the ocean.
The eggs would hatch months later, and then the small baby turtles would have to make their own perilous flight from the nest and into the Indian Ocean too.
