Outlining your life goals

Get a beautiful piece of paper and write down the following:

1. Your material goals (if any)
   This could be a new computer, your own house, a car or a great vacation. But beside each item, write down why you want it and why you need it. This will actually help you decide whether you really need it or not. It will also justify your reason for wanting it and work even harder to achieve it.

2. How you are planning to achieve these material things
   It could be by excelling at work and getting promoted, finding a more appropriate work, investing in a new business venture, etc.

3. What are you going to do after you have attained your material goals?
   So you already have that house, car and successful business/career. What do you plan to do for the rest of your life? This is the area to reflect on your hobbies, interests, and the other things that make you happy that are not material in nature. What other aspects in life aside from material things do you want to achieve? Set a world record, invent something, become a motivational speaker? Write them all down and beside each one, write your plan on how you will achieve them.

4. Who do you want to help?
   As the saying goes, ‘There is always goodness in the worst of man, because man is basically good’. Surely, there is someone or an institution that you want to help or a cause you want to advocate. Are you an animal lover? Then volunteer and donate to animal shelters. Do you have a big family whom you love dearly? Then devote your time and money to ensure their well being.

After you have satisfied your Hedonic pleasures, this should be your next goal – to help others. This will be the turning point of your goal to achieve both success and happiness.
