Well it's still beer for most people...

Germany has really strict laws about beer purity.

If you want to sell something as "beer" it can ONLY contain certain ingredients.

And Neuzelle monks historically did it differently, they've been adding a little sugar syrup to their beer for 500 years.

So under German law their beer wasn't "real" beer.

They were actually threatened with a 25,000€ fine until they went to court and got a ruling in their favor:

Ah! I get it. Kinda like the rule that only Champagne comes from France.
