Introduce yourself: how I ended up shooting a mini documentary in New Zealand as a Dutch medical student

in #flim7 years ago (edited)

Hello readers!
It is 11 pm where I am in the world, sitting behind my laptop while I should be studying for my neurology exam next week. I was going to do a standard ''hi my name is...'' ''Im from ..'' ''And I enjoy...'', but instead, Steemit seems like a platform which allows more creativity, connection and innovation, so here goes!

Every year my family and I have a new years tradition: after having dinner together close to the end of the year, we take turns and share our most badass moment of the year (we luckily all end up sharing at least 5 badass things), and how we plan on topping that in the next. It is a nice way to celebrate and appreciate what we have done with yet another 365 days.

This year's was easy for me: I shot a documentary series in New Zealand as part of my bachelors degree in Medicine. Even writing this down now sounds insane. I have always had an interest in making videos, ever since I was 14 years old I would document as much as I can with an old camera my parents weren't using.

After a good number of home video productions, I started taking videography more seriously when I found Youtube. Not as a creator, but learning from the people who were uploading explanations on how they did certain things.

At the same time I wanted to pursue a university degree so I worked my ass off to get into a medical school only to find that I missed being creative (med school is the least creative degree on the planet, lol). So when my third year rolled around and I had to write a bachelor thesis I did not hesitate, I was going to find a way to incorporate videography! And I did. Me and two fellow students raised funds to buy a load of equipment, fly to Auckland, NZ and film a 6 part series on the medical complaints system. These last three words might say nothing particular to most reading this, but I might make it a bit more interesting when I say that it is impossible to sue your doctor as a patient. That is right, shocking, isn't it?

I will leave you all with this gigantic cliff hanger, as my next post will most likely involve a link to the episodes.

Enough about me. How are you guys doing? What made you sign up for Steemit?

Peace

(obviously I meant to attach my Steemit photo, but I clicked enter too quickly and now there is no way back! Help!)
