My BOINC "steem" engine has become a beast!

in #gridcoin7 years ago

Approximately one week ago, while I was reading the last posts related with BOINC and GRC I saw one that caught my attention.

It was a post from a steemit colleague, @wellwild , which explained a step by step procedure on how to arrange a Free Trial Google Cloud Engine in order to create an instance and set up there the BOINC software.

I've never heard before about this Google service and even less I heard anything regarding BOINC installed at a cloud computer so, I decided to have a look and follow the steps in the tutorial (at the end of the post you will a link to that post).

I tried several LINUX distibutions, trying to sync BOINC with the Projects I would like to attach but unfortunately was impossible.

At the end, I created an instance with 8 CPU cores and Windows server installed. I easily manage to configure BOINC there and I attached the app to a couple of CPU projects of the whitelist, specifically I choose Asteroids and NFS.
I was really a surprised to see that BOINC was running like a Formula one there!

Since then, the Mag and Rag variables are increasing constantly and, of course, the earnings as well :

And this is the Mag Chart per project:

I was very happy by "slowly but surely" increasing the Mag every day but after installing the Virtual engine I was shocked!!!
So I have passed from an average Mag of 0.65 to more than 6 in less than six days and is increasing!!!

I know that this is not going to be forever, it is a free trial version and it will last approximately 3 weeks more cause they are giving you a finite credit of 300$ but it's being fun and I am happy because it is solving more projects, highly contributing to the science and, by the way, I'm earning some more GRC's that is not bad at all (LoL).

So, this is the current schedule of BOINC "steem" devices:

In addition, I am learning so much about this Cloud Engine technology which possibly I will use for other personal developments.

This is the link to the tutorial.

Keep on BOINCing!!!

Google normally doesn't allow using these Free Trials for crypto-mining, but I guess they are turning a blind eye here because of BOINC, humanitarian and philanthropic stuff etc. They are very quick to terminate any POW miners though.

well, it's clear that we are not mining anything but solving complex scientific algorithms for the sake of the mankind as well...so it is not explicitly mining any coin, but rewarding and promoting the development of the science.
Thanks for commenting
Cheers

I've used two trial instances with expenses divided over two months for those. Been working without issues both times.

I tried several LINUX distibutions, trying to sync BOINC with the Projects I would like to attach but unfortunately was impossible.

Can you please explain what you tried and what error messages you got?

well, I tried too all the available linux distributions and I did not manage to attach any project, neither to my grcpool account.
At the end what I did is to make an instance with Windows server and install then the BOINC manager inside.
This is the only thing that works for me under google cloud. It is much more expensive but works.
the message I got while running linux was:
Authorization failure: -155
Good luck!

I am assuming the error you got from running boinccmd command (for future always say which command or gui action gave the error).
There is a known bug with boinccmd, it requires file gui_rpc_auth.cfg is the current directory, you can copy that file from /var/lib/boinc-client/ directory. The gui manager does this automatically, but it must have permissions.

That is not a bug, it is a security feature to prevent other users from using the manager to manipulate the client

That is pretty sweet, I am for sure looking into this, following and upvoted!

Very nice, I hope vortac is right and they'll be lenient enough to give you the full ride :-).
