Speak Up & Be Heard
A few years ago, I struggled with a major flaw.
'What was it?'
I had a very soft voice.
And there was one day when I learned this lesson the hard way.
It was my senior year in high school.
At this stage of my life, I had a massive growth spurt.
Went from being a 5'3 tall dude to a 6 foot + tall guy.
And I had been working out the entire summer.
So your boy was getting swole.
'Nice man! You must have felt more confident, right?'
Not quite...
The exact opposite really.
For the longest time, I was a short, skinny little boy.
So people expected me to sound like a wimp.
But now?
I was tall & in good shape.
This was the built of someone who MUST be confident.
Therefore, my lack of it felt very unusual.
Although my physique had changed, my mindset had not.
My mindset was still of the small shy kid who didn't feel comfortable around people.
Therefore, I would talk softly in order to not offend anyone or say anything stupid.
I remember one day, I was in gym class with a bunch of the other kids.
We had just got done playing basketball.
And there was this fellow named Chris Borgan.
He was a fat pudgy guy who always talked as though he was some AMAZING basketball player.
But in reality? He was average at best.
Well, he was popping off his mouth talking about how he 'lit' us up this game & how amazing he was.
I remember saying 'Shut yo fat Pillsbury dough boy looking ass up.'
Then I looked around to see if anyone was laughing.
But no one heard me...
Except 1 guy.
Sitting right next to me was this kid named Max.
Max heard EXACTLY what I said.
And he went onto confidently look at Chris and say 'Shut yo fat Pillsbury dough boy looking ass up!!'
The entire locker room heard the joke & began bursting out in tears.
Chris turned red & finally piped down.
Those laughs were mine.
I was the one who made the joke.
But it was Max who got credit for it.
Kids were lining up to give him daps that day talking about how funny he was.
It pissed me off.
I couldn't even blame Max though.
He did what any great communicator would do.
He maximized the communication opportunity.
And he reaped the rewards.
That day, I went onto learn that you can be the funniest guy on the planet.
But unless YOU view yourself as funny, then you will continue to fall in the shadows.
The self image you have of you will dictate your voice.
Max knew anything he said will find a way to POP.
Not because of what he was saying. But the swagger he was saying it with.
There comes a time in everyone's life when they need to take their communication skills seriously.
Whether it's in the writing element or the spoken word.
Your message needs to be heard.
A soft voice is taking you out of the social game.
It has you being a bystander.
Rather than sitting on the side, invest in this evergreen skill.
Learn how to take your message from your internal world & display it boldly to the external world.
Sharpen your message so it can not only incite laughter, but influence your peers..
We have a spiritual side which wants us to grow & reach our true potential.
But we can't do that when we don't even have the confidence behind our own voice.
It's time to change that.
