Stepping Back in Time - A Captivating Mediaeval Festival in Rural Spain

in #travel8 years ago

The small and beautifully picturesque Spanish town of Alcala la Real is the setting for this annual festival. It marks the historic battles which took place between Christians and Muslims 600-700 years ago and led to the eventual unification of Spain.

The ancient fortress (La Motta) and the ruins within form the venue for this annual 3-night event.

To the sound of drums and mediaeval music visitors work their way up into the castle. As night falls their route is lit by torchlight. Many visitors and locals alike dress in traditional costume which adds to the festive atmosphere

Within the walls there are all the ingredients that you would expect to celebrate the rich cultural heritage of this area of Andalusia.

Held at the end of July it is in the heart of the Spanish summer. Daytimes are hot and families eat late in the evening. There are areas set aside for children to play and all is geared to it being a family event. There is food and drink, platters of Jamon, locally produced cheeses, breads and wine. Traders make up all manner of traditional dishes.

There is much music and dancing, and the strong Arabic themes which add to the entertainment. Within the heart of the castle, visitors listen spellbound as a poet recites a ballad of the battles and events that took place here so long ago. Tales are told of love stories, loyalty and betrayal by those involved. On the castle walls soldiers in period dress oversee the event.

All around, local craftsmen and artisans have set up stalls to sell their wares in this big open air marketplace. An aura of fun and enjoyment is soaked up by visitors and their families into the early hours of the following morning.

If you have the opportunity , why not put it on your travel list for next year. (With good fortune it could be that Steemit pays your way)

Love the short blurb on the history behind the location. Can you please post what dates and times this event happens? I think I'd like to make some plans to hit it in the future.

Hi there - it happens on the final weekend of July (though they are sometimes low key with their advertising). So, Friday Saturday and Sunday evenings starting at 9.00pm and usually continuing through until around 2.00 am. I'll do a separate post giving more details. Thanks again.

I appreciate the follow up. I will be on the lookout for the post.
