What Are You Passionate About? Is There a Single Answer?

What are you passionate about? It could be anything - from a hobby to a political issue, from a love affair to an addiction. Whatever your passion, you can cultivate it into a full-time career by finding a passion that feeds your creativity and drives your purpose through life. Here are seven ideas to help you start exploring what you're passionate about, and how you can make it your career.


"Do you have what it takes to become an entrepreneur?" A simple answer: being highly skilled at following directions. The idea behind becoming an entrepreneur is to create products or services that solve problems. So if you're passionate about solving people's problems, then being an entrepreneur makes good sense. The recruiter should recognize this and offer encouraging words.

"Do you have the drive to change your behavior to be more productive?" This question is designed to elicit another type of answer. If the recruiter senses that you're already highly productive and passionate about your work, then the only thing to do is support the vision of the company. Make sure you also answer the question with gusto - even if it means working extra hard.

"What are you passionate about one thing?" As with the previous answer, this question asks two questions. The first question asks what one thing you are passionate about, and what do you do to support it in your professional life. In addition, it requires you to choose one thing you would do when faced with an opportunity that would support your vision.

"Do you have any goals that are related to what you're passionate about?" The second part of this question forces you to say something. The purpose here is to find out what motivates you to keep doing what you do. For example, maybe your company's vision is to provide employees with access to technology that makes them more mobile. Your answer may be to become a trainer for people who work in information technology. Even if technology seems like your biggest motivator now, eventually it may turn out that what really draws you to the technology is the ability to use it to help others and make them more mobile.

"How has technology changed the way you do business?" Here's another excellent question to use when thinking about how to answer what are you passionate about questions. To think about it, perhaps technology has actually changed the way you do business because it allows companies to do things more efficiently. At the same time, perhaps it's not so much about efficiency as much as it might be about making sure that customers feel like their needs are important.

The final part of this section is almost exactly the same as the first one: What are you passionate about now? Think about what it was when you first got interested in your industry. When you think about it, were there any problems? If so, outline why those problems still exist in your field today.
