The Power of Self-Suggestion.

I want to share this little but interesting observation with you. Everyone who works with Adobe Photoshop on regular basis, probably knows, what I'm talking about.

Most of the times working in Photoshop includes using layers. Which means, that your image is composed of different parts, which kind of lie on top of each other, like layers of paper.

In order to draw/change/apply filter to a layer, you need to make it active (by clicking on it).

So, sometimes when I edit an image I accidentally click on a wrong layer, not the one I think I'm editing. Let's say I'm trying to use Burn Tool to make the girl's sweater darker.

But the active is the layer with sea and sky.

You might think that I wouldn't see any changes since basically I'm not changing anything.

BUT...
I swear that my eyes and my brain SEE the changes.

I see this:

And keep seeing for some time (like about 10-15 seconds). Remember that during these 15 seconds I'm NOT AWARE that something goes wrong, therefore I'm 100% convinced that I'm making the sweater darker.

The moment when I notice, that it's not dark ENOUGH, I start suspecting something and realize that I haven't done any changes simply because the right layer wasn't active.

It makes me wonder how often do we experience this and don't realize that things we are convinced in differ from those which are happening in reality.   What is the difference between subjective and objective anyway?

Think about it... :)

Sort:

I was just discussing a similar concept with my boyfriend @shenanigator. After asking whether some vegan soft pretzels were also gluten-free at a festival booth, the lady responded, "No, that's impossible. They can't be both vegan and gluten-free."

I didn't correct her, but this was incredibly comical because the two don't contradict each other. Plus, my diet is 100% gluten-free and vegan, and I don't eat nothing lol. It made me wonder, though... How many times have I said something so ludicrous and not even realized it? Answer: probably a ton! Our views are skewed by our perception of reality and the truth.

Haha! "that's impossible"! thank you for your comment, it made me laugh. After certain age I'm trying not to think seriously about questions with no answer. Trying, but not succeeding :D

Always a struggle ;)

Subjective vs. objective.....that can be a great question when it comes to conversation with people as well. Seems to blur regularly :-)

Agree. :) I was more teasing than seriously calling everyone to think about it on Monday evening :-P
