Teaching is Awesome

Price EA said that when teachers are underpaid then students would be short changed. It is true, but for some people teaching is a calling and they cannot but give their best even in the most unappealing conditions. I use to work as a teacher, in a very good school. I loved teaching; I always went the extra mile. I loved the children but at a point I had to quit teaching because the salary was too small. It was as if I was doing charity work.

I made barely enough to feed, cloth, transport myself to work and send some allowance to my younger brother. I had to start doing other online businesses and it greatly affected my work.

Teaching is very fulfilling work. When I was a teacher, I enjoyed every bit of it; but it wasn't easy for me because teaching is hard work too. I never felt like my work was done because there is always that one kid that didn't get it. There is always that one kid like Fayokun that would test your patience and your emotional intelligence.

Fayokun was raised in the London. He didn't find it easy to adjust to this new system of teaching when he came to Nigeria. I remember the students making fun of his British accent, they thought he was making it up. It took a while before he got use to the new system.

Fayokun always sat at the back of the class and he never asked question. It is when it was time to answer questions that you would discover that he was absent minded all this while. It was hard but he did change. I discovered that he just needed some extra love and attention. When children discover that you love them, they would love you too and submit to you. Trust me, if you are dealing with children born with silver spoon and golden forks, submission is a big deal.

Here are some pictures of myself Fayokun and Seyifunmi. I was happy to see them today. This boys have grown really tall. My goodness! Fayokun is the tallest and Seyifunmi is the handsome young man on white shirt.

I would love to be a teacher once again. Maybe when I am more financially stable or maybe I'll just look for opportunities to add value to the lives of young people anyway I can, even if I am not teaching.
