Smart Roads as an International Standard

As many will already know, I am a professor at a public university in my country, what few know is that one of my specialties is the design and construction of road projects, and I have a great desire in mind for a long time, I want smart roads in my country.

This is because many years ago for job reasons, I had to travel very frequently from Puerto La Cruz to Caracas, and returned at night, something not fun in Venezuela.

But, in parallel, my constant inclination to research has led me to review existing alternatives that are in use in other countries, one of which I have liked the most is the concept of “smart roads”.

What is a smart road?

We can intuit it, it is simply a road that through interaction with the driver offers a safe and pleasant trip, it is my personal opinion as an engineer and as a driver.

A smart road is capable of integrating multiple functionalities into its infrastructure that effectively provide assistance to the driver, such as:

  • Intelligent lighting through the use of reflective paints with a "photosensitive" effect, capable of recharging with sunlight, and at night its reflection on the pavement allows the driver a better orientation while traveling. This is the best utility for me.

  • Use of energy through the use of the air flow that is generated with the movement of the vehicles (it is generated in the lower part) as a form of wind energy that can put in motion strategically located turbines, which is finally an electric generator.

  • This energy, produced as described in the previous point, can also be used to power the “pavement” lights in countries where, due to the weather, it is not possible to use photosensitive paints, or to recharge electric vehicles, even if they are moving.

But if we take this premise to the urban environment, we would no longer be talking about roads, we would be talking about "urban roads", streets, avenues and expressways, in this case, the following advances would also be integrated:

  • Smart pedestrian crossings where universal mobility takes a great technological leap, because podotactile elements are incorporated to facilitate the movement of blind people. Likewise, projection devices of the "zebra lines" are included to eliminate the "pedestrian scratch" when necessary.

  • The use of AI (artificial intelligence) to manage traffic flow through traffic control applications and Big Data tools.

  • Interaction with the driver, providing information on the state of traffic in some locations, proximity of points of interest, weather conditions and everything that the intelligent environment of the IoT (internet of things) can provide you.

Thinking of all these alternatives comes to mind the great need to bring these technological advances to my country.

A few years ago I had the opportunity to interact in first person with the first intelligent devices for the control of pedestrian crossings in Madrid and Barcelona (Spain), I brought this impression to my senses and since then I have not stopped reviewing the subject.

It should be noted that in Europe more than 5 years ago some smart roads have already been in operation, countries such as Germany, the Netherlands, the United Kingdom, and Spain are only some that began by making major adaptations to the existing road infrastructure by placing sensors and devices and have obtained the best results, such as a significant reduction in CO2 emissions and in other cases a reduction in traffic accidents in some road sections.

Personally, I know that all this is perfectly feasible and perfectly buildable, but this is not enough.

I would like to hear from you who read my post, what else would it take for the use of smart roads to become an international standard to be used worldwide?

Hello @tocho2

I did not know that you are a university professor, from now on I will call you a colleague of crisis, I am also a university professor, in this case from the other end of the country exactly from the South of the Lake of Maracaibo, thank you for socializing this type of academic content, let's ask that our country, recovers our streets, avenues and highways quite deteriorated, and in a future we have these intelligent roads that fulfill the international standard. Kind regards, we continue reading.

Hello colleague..!

Here we continue "in the fight" as all Venezuelans say, hoping that soon "we will return to normality" and with the best expectations for the country.

See you soon, thanks for comment..!
