Stories of a backpacker: Christmas in Thailand - Spin-off, "Food Compilation"
"It is the food which you furnish to your mind that determines the whole character of your life."

Have you ever eaten a scorpion?
Kao San Road, Bangkok, Thailand
Yes, this was another bucket's list goal I could achieve in Thailand, eating an insect.
If you never tried I will give you a small spoiler, it doesn't taste. It is really crunchy, but nothing that you can remind apart of the strange feeling while actually doing it!
Don't worry Thailand food is not only insects but much more and much better.
I want to write this post to show you how you can "survive" having a very cheap and tasty set of Street Food options.
Yes, because if you want to travel to Asia, and especially to Thailand you have to try the street food. Ok, maybe not the insects, but let's have a look to what I really enjoyed during my trips.
Pad Thai
The big classic, Pad Thai, so tasty and cheap. It is made with soaked dried rice noodles, which are stir-fried with eggs and chopped firm tofu.
You can find it in varieties of chicken, pork, fish or vegetarian. Already only with this one, you can cover enough meals.
If prepared in the street it costs around 50 Bhat, a bit more than one Euro, it has to be tried.
Chicken Pad Thai, Thailand
Rice with chicken and vegetables
Fried and steam chicken served with rice and vegetables. This classic street food can cost around 1.50 Euro.
Street Food, Thailand
Fruit, fruit, fruit
It's unbelievable how cheap fruit can be in Thailand. Fresh clean and cut pineapples for 1 Euro, fruit shake for 1.50, coconuts, bananas, dragon fruits, papaya and much more. With the warm and humidity you find there, I was eating fruit all day.
Fresh fruits in a big supermarket, Koh Chang, Thailand
Fish
Of course.
The country most common food, you can eat fresh fish for ridicolous prices. The street food it's full, it this picture some big rotating fishes on the sidewalk.
Fish street food, Bangkok
Chinese food
Chinese food is obviously everywhere.
Roast beef with barbecue sauce served with rice at the table. The cost, about 2.50 €.
Chinese restaurant, Bangkok
Food island MBK, Bangkok
A champion's breakfast
Omelets with tomatoes and onion, sandwich with tuna and tomatoes. Accompanied by orange juice. It would have been a long day.
International breakfast, Koh Chang, Thailand
Stir fried noodles
Stir fried noodles with chicken, varied with pork, fish or tofu.
I learned to eat with chopsticks. Yeah!
Street food. Very tasty, price around one euro.
Street food noodles, Koh Phangan, Thailand
Hungry Nerd Restaurant
A friendry franchising restaurant line, with very good prices.
If you want to relax eating at the table.
Chicken steak served with toast, french fries, salad, and sauces.
Only about 2 Euro.
Fast food restaurant, Bangkok
Food porn
Fried seafood served on the pan, the photo cannot tell how much tasty this can be.
Cost about 3 Euro.
Central Festival, Pattaya, Thailand
Dessert
Banana and chocolate waffles. 1.50 Euro.
MBK Food Island, Bangkok
And the insects?
If you want to try the insects don't do it in Kao San Road, they are expensive and probably not so healty there.
But if you're traveling around Thailand, you'll maybe find a more affordable insect street food stand like this, and who knows, maybe you'll be brave enough to try...

I love trying strange food, but scorpion would be a difficult one for me! Cheers to your bravery!
Well, you could always try the grasshoppers...Ahah
I actually have tried grasshoppers!! Crunchy but not my definition of delicious. haha!
Then you didn't lose anything more with the scorpion! :D
Good to know! Then if I even get offered a bite of scorpion I can politely decline with no sense of adventure-guilt :)
I remember seeing the insect street food and wanted to try some, but the smell of the roasting of the insects was a complete turnoff. So how was the scorpion? Any video of you eating them?
Yes, I have a video of it! But I didn't upload it on YouTube or so, then I cannot share it here!
The scorpion has no taste at all...lol
Man I miss Thailand - its incredible the food you can get for the pice :/ !! Love the pics dude :)
