Improving My Ability to Express Myself Creatively
Today I'm sharing another page from my sketchbook. I'm having a lot of fun with my sketchbook lately, improvising and just enjoying working on it without thinking about application.
The left hand side page features some experimental mark making created with stamps and ink. The right hand side contains some simple shapes with a layout inspired by the mark making on the previous page.
This is not meant as a pattern design, but purely as an act of creativity and an exercise in creating without becoming to attached to end results. The latter being something I seem to struggle with a lot and sometimes feel limits me as a sort of fear of failure or creating something that's not aesthetically pleasing. I'm trying to liberate myself from these sort of limiting thoughts and therefore improve my ability to express myself creatively.

Sketchbooks are awesome - yours is looking really cool! Using them as an act of exploring creatively is perfect - that's what they're for :) You can figure all the important stuff out or just express yourself freely to get the juices flowing! Keep it up, at the end the are all perfect little treasures that will show your evolvement! :)
Thanks! Exploring is what they are meant for indeed, but I still find it difficult not to judge the results. Getting better at it though :-)
I keep a stack of plain white index cards around for scribbling on. I've got no talent for reproducing recognizable form, but no-consequence doodling is a great way to come up with ideas when I'm blocked. (It's probably why I usually do my rough drafts in fountain pen - there's something about moving the hand around.)
I really like your patterns. They remind me of a formal garden.
Index cards are a great idea, as I've been known to rip out pages from my sketchbook! No need for that with separate cards.
Now you've mentioned garden, I do see how it could kind of be an aerial view of a garden design :-)
