Impasse
Impasse
Fat drops of rain descend from the heavens plastering woolen shawl
To my shivering bones as I lift the latch on the sagging garden gate.
My mind is set on singular purpose, if somewhat unsure of the most
Plausible route through the forest to reach your sanctuary-in-disguise
Before the threatening night sky releases this looming storm in earnest.
I step lightly and cautiously through the pools that have just formed
On the well-worn footpath, veering slightly south once I clear the estate.
The downward slope towards the river presents a devious task causing a
Near tumble into the black water just inches beneath my dangling frame.
I steady my would-be weakness and scold myself for almost losing the
Sack of wine and pastries that are tucked by my side; sustenance for
The stranger who has wandered into unwelcoming territory and gazed for a
Moment too long into these eyes which have never truly seen the world.
A slip of curling smoke just ahead reassures me of my direction, and I
Climb up the embankment now wholly soaked by the assault from above.
Lifting the mass of fastened branches, I lower my head and duck into
The cave entrance... immediately warmed by the crackling fire and the
Heat that suddenly rises to my cheeks as I look the enemy dead in the eye.
