Synopsis

Shizuku Mizutani is apathetic towards her classmates, only caring about her grades. However, her cold view of life begins to change when she meets Haru Yoshida, a violent troublemaker who stopped attending class after getting into a fight early in the school year. He is not much different from her, though—he too understands little about human nature and does not have any friends. Much to Shizuku's surprise, he proclaims that she will be his friend and immediately confesses his feelings towards her upon meeting her.

Because of her lack of friends and social interaction, Shizuku has a hard time understanding her relationship with Haru. But slowly, their friendship begins to progress, and she discovers that there is more to Haru than violence. She begins to develop feelings for him, but is unsure what kind of emotions she is experiencing. Together, Shizuku and Haru explore the true nature of their relationship and emotions.

Review

A classic love story between a delinquent and a nerd. But there's more to it than that! This is not your usual love story where the heroine keeps crying and gets saved by the hero. This is also not your usual nerd and delinquent story where the main male lead picks on the nerd girl. It's way different!

Despite being a delinquent, Yoshida Haru longs to be with friends and form friendships with them. He's just so lucky he found the right people after getting into high school (he got suspended at first, though) through Mitty (Shizuku's nickname given by Natsume Asako). I love Shizuku's character there because it seemed practical to me. I mean, she's really practical. She loves math problems compare to girl's usual love problems and I like that. She's levelheaded. Even when Haru and Shizuku got into this ambiguous relationship, she keeps her cool and Haru keeps on derailing it.

Another thing I love in this anime is Yamaken! He's your usual 'young master' who, despite being in a delinquent group, hates violence and pain. He also gets lost easily which is kinda cute. He, kind of, has an inferiority complex to Haru when it comes to his feelings to Shizuku but he's really cute. Personally, I'd prefer Yamaken over Haru though I have no qualms Shizuku being with Haru.

To summarize, Tonari no Kaibutsu-kun is a good anime to watch. Read the manga, too. It's even better than the anime!

P.S.: I notice in the #anime tag, everything are mainstreams. So I'll try to recommend more in the Slice of Life, Romance, and Shoujo genres.
