Day 3 After the Apocalypse ...
You've found a running stream and just started learning what's safe to eat ...
You begin to think ... I'd like something a little tastier, maybe some seasoning and MEAT
The common crayfish is a freshwater crustacean that's easy to catch with a bucket and some bread.
There are even some fish in the shallow water (minnows look out ... there's a bigger fish now!)
But food without seasoning gets a little boring.
What to do???
Fennel tastes a bit like licorice and every part of the plant (stem, seed, flower, and root bulb) is edible. The fennel plant is a good source of vitamin A, Iron, sugar, and water. It's relatively "safe" compared to other plants because it isn't easily confused with its poisonous counterparts.
Usually you'll find this tasty plant in places where there is water either nearby or underground.
Fennel can also be brewed into a tea to aid with constipation and stomach upset.
Photo's are original (I had to balance on rocks to get one of that 8 inch long crayfish) taken by @timeshiftarts (Beau Beach) at Mission Trails Regional Park in Santee, California
This is part of a series on survivalism in the wild.
Day 3 and we are cooking Crayfish with seasoning around the fire. Are we boiling them or cooking them on an open fire?
I'd probably go with a boil. The algae there in the river even adds a bit of flavor to the boil :)
Sounds good, could also use the Crayfish boil leftovers for soup stock.
