Apple pie or apple crumble?

The past few days I have been experimenting with various recipes for apple pie, and can present you three new recipes. As a general rule, use a mix of apples, not just one type. Also, if the skin is thin, don’t peel them.

The apple crumble is very tasty, not so healthy as it is full of sugar and can be accompanied with crème or ice cream. I enjoyed it straight.

Main ingredients: for the dough: 400 gr of all purpose flour, 400 gr of sugar, 20 gr of baking powder, vanilla powder (1 capsule of vanilla powder or vanilla extract), 250gr of corn oil, 1 egg, 1 pinch of salt. For the apple filling: 5-6 apples (shred the apples in a cheese grater), 2 handfuls of walnuts (in small pieces), 1 handful of raisins, 100 gr of sugar and 2 tbsp of honey, 1 tbsp of cinnamon powder. For the finishing optionally cinnamon powder and caster sugar

The whole idea is to make a combination of baked apples with biscuit-like mixture. It is really amazing, fatty and can’t – stop – until – you – eat – it - all dessert. So, put all the ingredients for the base of the crumble in a deep bowl and knead until it becomes like a cookie dough.

In a different bowl grate all the apples and mix them with the rest of the ingredients: the cinnamon, nuts and raisins, sugar and honey.

Use a tray with a removable baking frame. Also: very important, apply a baking paper in the tray before pouring in the mixtures.

So get this round tray, apply the baking paper and some oil, spread the 2/3 of your cookie dough on the bottom and a bit on the sides, pour the apple mixture all over the cookie dough and on top, powder the rest of the mixture as a topping. You will find that this mixture is a bit difficult to spread on the tray, but it’s ok, it will become somewhat rustic. If there are liquids from the apples, get rid of them once applying the mixture on the dough.

My mistakes were two: I couldn’t figure out if the dough was done with the usual way of inserting a knife in the dough and as I was worried of it being under baked, I over baked it. Nontheless it was tasteful. My 2nd mistake was that I didn’t use a baking paper and the apple crumble couldn’t be cut properly. But then again, it is ok as it is supposed to be served as a mixture and not as a piece of cake. Bake for 30-40’ in 150-160C. Sprinkle cinnamon and caster sugar once it has cooled down.
