The Camel Thorn tree
The Camel Thorn tree. ( Kameldoorn Boom )
Firstly this is my favorite wood to use to at a Braai,it is a very hard type of wood and has a real nice smell when burning on the braai.
The tree has a long life and can grow to a height of 20 odd metres but usually you only find them growing to about eight metres.
You will find them growing in very sandy conditions and need very little water but when growing close to water they really grow tall, in Upington, South Africa, there is an island resort with a lot of Camel Thorn trees growing there and every one is at least 20 metres high.
They grow under very hot conditions and survive under very cold and frost conditions.
The trees are usually grow into a shape like an umbrella.
These huge nest are made by weaver birds and make a multifamily nest ( safety in numbers ), some of the nests are really large and enclose the whole top of the tree.
The seeds of the Camel Thorn are of a bean type seed, has a hardish shell.
Most of the animals eat the seeds, here are some Impala eating the seeds.
Here again are Elephant and Giraffe also eating the Camel Thorn seeds.
Beautiful trees. I remember the large camel thorn trees in Upington.
Yes they are the largest camel thorns that I myself have seen.
