Health Risks from Long-Term Exposure to Cell Phone & Wireless Radiation
Cellphones have changed our lives, undoubtedly! The user base of cellphones has increased drastically in the recent years in the US and the world outside. But too much of anything is bad—the saying holds perfectly true for the rapidly increasing use of cellphones among the masses. Probably worse than cigarettes, the overuse of cellphones is silently hurting your health and now posing a public health threat.
Various studies related to cellphone radiations suggest that long-term exposure to radiations emitted by wireless communication devices, including mobile phones, tablets, laptops, and Wi-Fi router devices, may lead to serious health concerns in humans.
The California Department of Public Health (CDPH), in December 2017, issued a warning against potential risks of cellphone radiations to human health. The warning came as a series of guidelines on how to reduce exposure to radiofrequency (RF) electromagnetic fields from cellphones. These guidelines by CDPH were based on numerous researches and scientific studies carried out to reveal the potential risks of long-term, high-use of mobile phones on human health.
Anthony B. Miller, an expert cancer researcher and advisor to the World Health Organization International Agency for Research on Cancer (WHO/IARC), has also opined that RF exposure from any source can contribute to cancer development and cancer promotion. According to him, enough study-based evidences have been published since 2011 that fully qualify the criteria to classify signals emitted from cellphones as “Group 1 carcinogenic to humans”. In 2011, the WHO/IARC classified RF radiation as “Group 2B possibly carcinogenic to humans” agent.
RF Energy and Potential Health Problems
Mobile phones and other wireless network devices put out radiofrequency energy in the form of non-ionizing electromagnetic radiations when they send or receive signals to and from cell towers. Concerns to public health ascended when some scientists and public health officials suggested possibility of serious health problems due to long-term exposure to electromagnetic radiations, including increased risk of brain cancer and tumors of the acoustic nerve and salivary glands. The harmful effects of EMF (electric and magnetic fields) radiation exposure are not limited to cancer. Continued exposure to RF energy also has showed possibility of infertility in males, leading to lower sperm count and inactive or less mobile sperm. Other health problems suggested by studies include depression, stress, headaches, insomnia and effects on the cognitive ability. According to a research, electromagnetic radiation is even associated with DNA damage. With so many likely risks, caution is warranted.
Although emitted radiations from cellphones are relatively weak, they still affect nearby cells and tissues when the exposure is for an extended period and the device is kept close to the body, like in the pocket or on the bed as you sleep. Therefore, phone safety advocates recommend keeping cellphones away from the body when you are not using them, say in a backpack, rather than your pocket. Also, it is suggested to keep phones away from the bed or at a safe distance from your sleeping place. We’ll talk more about the safer use of cellphones to limit exposure to radio frequency energy in our upcoming blog post.
Studies have also suggested that cellphones emit RF energy even when connected to Wi-Fi or Bluetooth devices, however, the intensity of radiations is comparatively low.
Are Children at Greater Risk?
The user base of mobile phones is still growing, particularly among young adults and children. According to a study by CDPH, the average age when children get their first mobile phone in the U.S. is now just 10 years. During the growth and development years of a child, RF energy may affect the child’s brain and body more easily and the effects could be more destructive and long lasting. And it’s a fact that children’s brains absorb twice as much cellphone radiation as those of adults. While a lot of studies are still going and we are yet to reach any conclusion on the effects of cellphone use on children and teens’ health, we can’t afford to ignore the ones that have showed serious health risks, when we are talking about our dear kids. Some findings have associated high cellphone use in children with hearing problems, ringing in the ears (tinnitus), frequent headaches, and decreased health and well-being.
The solution is to teach and encourage children to limit their cellphone use to only important calls, texts, and internet access.
Beware of So-Called “Radiation Shields”
If you have ever thought of looking for protection from RF radiations, you would have surely come across a range of EMF shielding products that, purportedly, can be used in many forms to block harmful electromagnetic waves. But do these “radiation shields” and other RF energy blocking devices really work? Experts advise to skip these so-called radiation shields, such as antenna caps and keypad covers, as they force your device to work harder to transmit signals by working as a hindrance to the connection quality. This results in the device emitting more RF energy to complete the connection, which is logically increasing your brain and body’s exposure to the harmful radiations rather than diminishing it.
The dilemma is good performance shielding products on the market are expensive, and poor shielding can make things worse. In fact, we insist you not to believe a radiation shielding product that boasts of 100% RF energy block! That’s practically impossible, as of now.
The Ti22 Liquid Screen Protector is an invisible safety shield in the form of a liquid coating that is applied onto your phone’s screen to significantly reduce exposure to electromagnetic radiations. It is made of titanium dioxide nanoparticles, which form a mesh-like wire network, which makes it difficult for electromagnetic fields to penetrate. Backed by research and studies, this liquid protective layer is known to reduce the EMF exposure and redirects and redistributes up to 95% of the harmful glass emitted radiation absorbed by the head – all without affecting the cellphone’s performance.
Not just that, this screen protection coating also keeps your device safe from scratches and scuffs, and has an anti-bacterial effect that keeps your phone’s screen (and you) germ-free. It also bestows your phone’s screen surface with a hardness rating of 9H, standing next only to diamond, while keeping it smooth and clean at all times.
