Tutorial: Eco-bag DIY!

in #tutorial6 years ago

Hi steemians! I think that we all know how much damage has been done to the environment with the excessive use of plastic bags over the recent decades. Fortunately we have at present several alternatives to prevent the contamination keep on spreading like the biodegradable bags, but my favorite is undoubtedly the use of fabric bags because are completely safe and you can find them from many models.

Have fun making your own eco-bag with this tutorial!

Materials:

  • 2 pieces of fabric of 60 x 8 cm to make the bag handles.
  • 2 pieces of fabric of 43 x 46 cm to the bag.
  • Fabric paint.

You can use any type of fabric, for this one i used Canvas.

Design:

The first thing we'll do is decorate the fabric. You can use from patches of other fabrics with prints or different colors to the one you used for the bag to markers spread your fabric on a table and let the imagination fly!

To my bag i used a plastic sheet as a stamp to decorate the fabric. Be creative and use what you want to make a great design!

Important details

In the first image you can see that I placed tape in a corner to leave a place without paint, this gives me space to add something more to the design. Besides that I put stem to the leaves and dropped a few drops of paint in the free spaces.

The handles:

Fold in half and start sewing the edge of both strips, you can do it by hand or with a sewing machine. Make points followed and as uniform as you can if you do it by hand, but you can do a straight seam with the machine. Once both are ready, turn them over and press them, taking care that the seam is on one side or underneath.

Before sewing them to the body of the bag, measure four centimeters in the top rim of both pieces and then mark it with pins, then you sew on a rect line

To place the handles in the exact site measure your bag and make a mark in half, counts nine centimeters on each side from the mark and fixes each end of the handles with pins, then sew them to the cover of the bag making an X with the machine or by hand. Don't forget to bend the edges of the handles that had been loose when gluing them.

To finish

You can sew the sides of your bag with a rect sewing and reinforce it with a zigzag. Many tutorials recommend use glue for this type of projects but i prefer to use the safe way. After finishing sewing, be sure to cut all loose threads.

Now you are ready to enjoy your new Eco-bag!
