The Staircase Of Disbelief. .....How Far Up Will You Go?......(For Critical Thinkers Only!)

in #philosophy7 years ago (edited)

The first part of the title of this post is also the title of a video I have linked at the end but before you decide whether or not you would like to watch it, I want to preface it by adding a few thoughts of my own as an introduction.

The video is of a radio interview with Neil Kramer, a philosopher, who does a fantastic job of explaining why some of us are unable to accept the possibility of our reality not necessarily being what we believe it to be. Parts of the video may make some of you feel a little uncomfortable if you are not accustomed to the subjects being discussed but personally, I feel everything should be open to investigation and re-investigation for all of us individually until we can reach a satisfactory determination of our own, rather than relying on the word of those who have a stake in our beliefs.

In my opinion, there should be no taboo subjects. By depriving ourselves of the opportunity to be open minded and think critically about subjects we are told are beyond criticism. we are doing ourselves and humanity a dis-service and holding back our understanding of the true nature of our society and reality.

Like many of you, I am on a journey of self discovery and understanding from behind the screen of a computer. I have no first hand knowledge of a lot of the things I talk about and don't have anywhere near enough information to make a determination as to my position on any of them but I am open minded enough to not dismiss something just because it is accepted wisdom and silly to even consider. I am not afraid to ask silly questions or be proven wrong. If I am wrong about something, I welcome the correction.

There are lots of things I know for sure because I have experience of them first hand and I have the capacity to understand the dynamics. Some things I have accepted because they seem to make sense to my limited knowledge and understanding of how these things work and there are some things which I have now and will never have the capacity to understand but which I am assured by the experts of our society are beyond scrutiny. I am always trying to improve my chances of understanding the things I have a limited capacity for, which is why I am always open to new information or ways of thinking that might help me, even in thinking about those things which seem beyond me, so I think it best to always challenge the current understanding I have when given the opportunity.....which I am offering you now.

If you have given the subject matter your own personal due consideration and investigation and reached your own conclusions then I salute you, whatever your position or opinion but if you have a preconceived position based on what you have been told by someone else who would stand to benefit in some way from you believing a certain version of events, without doing any investigation of your own to establish the validity of their claims, then I'm afraid you have no position at all.

The sharing of this video is designed to help you open your mind and think for yourself.

Belief is the enemy of knowledge!

What do you believe?

I think it's important to think critically about everything one has been told since childhood, and determine for oneself the degree of truth in it. Plato told us that Socrates said, the unexamined life is not worth living. I agree.

I'm listening to the video now...
