How many penguins can you see?

Believe it or not penguins can not tell each other apart from looking at one another! Well, it does kind of make sense because personally I can not tell one from another how could they... How breeding partners can tell themselves apart from the the rest of the many 1,000's of others in a breeding colony is from their distinct sound/call. gives you a little idea how incredible listeners they are!

It is also how parents and chicks identify and find each other in the crowd of many when everyone looks like your mum and dad. To give you an idea of how many penguins there can be in a breeding colony, the photos below are from Baily Head, which is on Deception Island in the South Shetland Islands. It is estimated to be roughly 50,000 breeding pairs and a the end of the summer breeding season there can be up to 175,000 individual Chinstrap penguins!
