THE HOLI DAY - Unforgettable Memory

This morning, I was looking at some photos on my laptop and I found some that were taken at a function at my university in 2020. When I was looking at them, my memory went back a year. The day was 11th February 2020 and such a beautiful day it was. The first function that we have at the very beginning of every year. 😍

We hold the Thaipongal and Holi festivals at the university to coincide with the Thaipongal festival which Tamils celebrate in January. This was the second Holi ceremony which I attended in my university life. We are always eagerly waiting for this day because it is a day filled with fun and happiness. That day, all the lectures were cancelled since all the lecturers attended the function. In the morning, we celebrate the Thaipongal ceremony with all the traditions and after that, there is a cultural show which filled with Tamil cultural items. And then in the evening, we celebrate the Holi. All the things are led by Tamil students studying at our university and obviously, they beautifully organize the function. Anyone can then dress up as Tamils, by a saree or salwar and also with decorating the hair with Jasmin flowers.

As I said in the evening, the Holi festival is held. It is my most favourite part of the day because we all play with colors. Last time, we had to perform a dancing item at the function which we were practicing for 2 weeks.

At about 3 p.m. Holi function was begun. The opening item was breaking color pots. It’s some kind of a tradition that boys form human pyramids to break the pot filled with butter while girls distracting them by throwing colors as I heard. But in here we didn’t do that human pyramid game but breaking the color pot with a club. That was fun to watch but not for the players because they got wet with colored water. Then after some items, we had to perform. I remember how much we were scared when the time to perform was getting closer. Anyhow, we performed better than we thought. 😂

The most enjoyable part of the day is playing with colors. Everyone runs everywhere to throw colors and also to be saved but no one is spared. At the end of the function, there is a DJ show. Time for some craziness! 💃 So, there is a lot to recall. But this year! Will this year also be an empty year? 😭 We already miss a lot of things because of the Covid epidemic that is currently raging all over the world. I wish that this menace facing the world will end soon and recover.
