Asian Water Buffalo, Bubalus Arnee
A little piece of Thailand... Asian Water buffalo have been domesticated by humans for 4,500-5,000 years. Domestic water buffalo, while derived from wild buffalo, are different in appearance and behavior.
On regular dog walks and treks I often stumble upon a water buffalo. They are always docile and friendly, with a calm demeanor. These 2 gentle giants are the friendliest couple I have encountered.
South East Asia uses them for day to day farming out in rural areas. It is still common place to see these domesicated animals ploughing fields and pulling carts.
The population of Wild Water Buffalo is estimated to be fewer than 4,000 individuals and declining. The challenge of differentiating wild buffalo, domestic stock, feral animals, and hybrids makes population surveys difficult. Some authors suggest that there may be no genetically pure wild buffalo remaining, since interbreeding with domestic buffalo has become so widespread.
