Anagarika Dharmapala is known as one of the greatest nobles who came down to Sri Lanka. He was born on 17th September 1864 in Hinthetiya, Matara. His first name is Don David Hewavitharana. At that time our country was ruled as a colony of the British Empire. At that time there was a missionary education system in Sri Lanka and only a few English educated people were empowered. Society was also divided into the upper class and lower class.
He then changed his name from Don David to Dharmapala. When he visited India he saw that many Buddhist temples including Buddhagaya had been destroyed by Hindus. Thereafter he worked resolutely to save Buddhism. I hope you have all heard a special saying by him.

" සිංහලයිනි නැගිටිව්, බුද්ධගයාව බේරාගනිව්....!"

He then began lecturing in various areas. It is said that Henri Aulcut also participated in it. He spoke out against alcoholism and various forms of wrongdoing. He spoke for the protection of the Buddha Sasana and the Sinhala nation. In 1886 Anagarika Dharmapala lived a celibate life. He started the Mahabodhi Society, Mahabodhi, two Sinhala and English magazines and the Sinhala Buddhist newspaper. He acted as a special person and an exemplary guide in the fight against imperialism. He also had to start the Mahabodhi Maha Vidyalaya. After spending his time in this manner, he entered the clerical life as Siri Devamitta in Dambadiva. He passed away on April 29, 1933. Even after his death, his last wish was for the Buddha Sasana to be reborn in Dambadiva to shine.
