Old Engelhard 10oz Silver BarssteemCreated with Sketch.

in #silver9 years ago (edited)

I didn't realize that there would be several silver bugs on Steemit when I joined. I am, however, glad to find a new group of stackers to chat with. I love my shiny!! It makes me feel like a pirate when I clink it around. Personally, I don't really stack too much collector stuff, I mainly stick with generics. I do like old vintage bars though. Engelhard is probably the most collectable of the vintage bars. They had several variations of the 10oz bar throughout their years in business. Because of the varying mintage numbers and rarity, they are ranked in tiers. Tier 1 is the most rare, and tier 5 is the most common (although still limited in number.) Some demand quite the premium!. These are just a couple of the Engelhard bars that I own.

This is a "series 7" bar, it is a poured bar. Notice the back of it, it is called a "waffle back". These are my favorite. Also, notice on the front, the 999 has the offset 9 in the last spot, most did not have this. This is a Tier 4, with less than 50,000 total minted.

The second bar I'll share is a "series 12, variety A", it is a pressed bar. It is the last time that the P prefix was used in the serial number. I like the sharp lines on this, and the back is really cool looking! This is a tier 3, with less than 10,000 minted.

Like I said earlier, I normally buy boring generic silver, but when I find a good deal on these, I just can't resist. Generic bars can be found for as low a .79 above spot prices. Unfortunately these vintage bars can carry a premium of up to $8 over spot. I like more metal for the money, which is why i stick with generics, but you gotta have something fun in the stack too! If you would like more information on the types of bars Engelhard made, and their history, there is a great website.....http://allengelhard.com/ They pretty much have everything you need to know there. They have tons of great pics on there of some really cool silver! I hope you enjoyed looking at these, and hope you get to add to your stack soon!

Love silver coins myself of all kinds.

I like my pre '65 coins too much!! LOL! These bars and the "junk"will be the last to go i think.

I like the bars when I've got the fiat to splurge - but I pretty much stick to N.American 1-Oz coins: Eagles, Maple Leafs with an eye to acquire some Mexican soon - IMO one of the most lovely around.

My generic bars were bought with the specific purpose of a gold swap at some point in the future. Other than those, it's mainly 1oz rounds, with some Eagles. I do like those Mexican Libertads too, they are definitely the most beautiful government issue!

Why consider gold at all (other than smaller size for max portability)? Silver has much more industrial use (if industry as we know it survives), is much rarer, and is collected by fewer investors. That being said, at some point when the manipulation ends, its silver-to-gold ratio should return to the 40:1 range (or better). I'd consider a swap at some point myself, but figure I may die of old age before that happens! In the meantime - silver is CHEAP!

I'll start to swap if it hits 45, I like gold more than silver but it's too easy to see how undervalued silver is right now.

As promised ! Upped and resteemed ! Followed too , keep up the great work , steel on my friend from Texas ! 👍👍👍

I never bought a bar for tax reasons. But I think I'm gonna do it anyway.. like the chunky ones!!!

I do like those little chunky bars too!! I totally understand that reason for not buying bars though.
