Alone in the Wild - Chowilla Kayak Camping Expedition - Part 5
This is the fifth part of my series Alone in the Wild - Chowilla Kayak Camping Expedition
This series documents my journey through the Chowilla Game Reserve, as I make my way through the anabranch systems of the Murray River.
This was honestly the best camping expedition I have ever done, and I will be doing more things like this in the future.
I couldn't find much information documenting kayaking through Chowilla, so this is a good way too see the anabranch systems. In fact many people don't even know it exists, but because I grew up in Renmark a town close by I knew it existed as I had heard the locals talk about it before but it wasn't until I was older that I actually visited the area.
Most people will not see some of these parts of the Murray, so it's a good way to see more of South Australia without having to travel and maybe it will inspire you to do something similar. I have to admit it was a concern of mine that the maps might not be accurate, or that I get lost in the reserve so follow my lead and you won't have to worry about that if you do decide to partake in a journey like this.
In this part of my journey I continue my journey arriving at my first campsite for the trip.
The campsite was a really nice spot to relax and recoup some energy for the next part of my trip. I got a fire going and had a nice piece of thick cut steak which after a long day of kayaking and portaging tasted amazing.
I listened to a range of music from a terrific mix on spotify, which is a playlist of tracks from the Sons of Anarchy TV series and also similar songs.
I was lucky as there was no moon in the sky, so I was able to sit back and enjoy the night sky. I had a nice view of the outer arm of the milky way.
I always love sitting by the camp fire and gazing at the stars, you never really know what you might see. I remember camping about 10 years ago and I was gazing at the night sky, when I saw a meteorite enter the earths atmosphere. It started glowing white hot and lit up the night sky and then exploded about 50 kms away from me, I will never forget the raw power of it which was incredible and the sonic boom from the explosion ripped through the air.
After spending the night camping I continued on my journey making my way towards the second camp site.
I was quite sore in the morning as having a bad back and going camping and doing expeditions like this don't mix well, it happens every time I go camping. As much as I love the outdoors I can't deny it's a little depression knowing that I'm going to be in pain when I wake up in the morning.
I came prepared though and took a couple of pain killers with me for the trip, so I took one of them and continued on my journey.
I'm expecting this to be about a 12 part series, I would have liked to upload longer videos but as it is it takes forever to upload a 30 min part.
Once I have finished the series I'm going to condense all the best bits into on big movie which will be interesting :)
