As a global nomad I often run into people from different parts of the world and more often then not the conversation shifts to the cost of living in a city.

However in the last few days I find the discussion shifting to the cost of getting treated for covid19

In General one wants the best possible treatment for oneself and our loved ones so one would like to approach the best possible facility to get the treatment.

Covid19 being a deadly virus does requires a specialized facility which is not available in all hospitals across the city.

One needs to approach a specialized hospital for the same. So when an acquaintance started making frantic calls to arrange for a large sum of cash it made me curious about the cost of treatment.

Take a wild guess !

Before I disclose the numbers, close your eyes, take a deep breath and think of a number the bigger the better as to what could be the daily expenditure for getting treated in the hospital on a per day basis?

1day cost = 0.2772 BTC per day (1 BTC =$9500)
in USD$ terms it is
1 Day cost = $2,633.40

Initial Deposit to be made

2X 0.2772= 0.5544 BTC
In USD terms = $5266.8

Average Stay in hospital = 14 to 17 days

So taking the average mean as 15.5 days or 16 days for the sake of payment it work to
BTC Cost = 4.4352 BTC
USD cost = US$ 42134.4

Now let us look at the lower end of the cost.
Typically the cost may require an initial deposit equivalent of
0.1385 BTC or US$1316.70 and the total cost may be in the range of
around 0.97 BTC or around USD$ 9217

Can the common Joe afford this treatment?

So the big question is does one have that kind of money to get treated?
In a lot of cases the answer is a No!

Not all people have medical coverage or a health insurance and even in cases where the coverage is present it may not be sufficient to cover these kind of costs.
Also the hospital you may be going to may not honor the medical insurance or may ask you for a substantial down payment to start the treatment.
Despite this high cost one may have to wait several hours to get admitted to the hospital.
These costs are tentative and may go on the higher side if the stay gets prolonged or there are other complications.

It is good to have a good medical insurance that covers covid 19 however a much better option would be to play it safe and not getting infected.

At the risk of being repetitive I say this...

• Stay at home & work remotely

If this is an option then this can be best for you. This also depends upon your work being such that you can work from home or work remotely.

• Wear protective masks when you go out

So you minimize the risk of infection.

• Maintain social distancing

• Practice good hand hygiene and clean hands with soap and water or use a hand sanitizer.

My final thoughts

Stay safe and healthy and if you are in a position save some money for the future.
I know it sounds like a cliché however looking at the way things are moving it is not hard to see how things may get tougher and we may have less disposable income in our hands.
