Honor your parents as the Lord wants.
Children, obey your parents in the Lord: for this is right.
Ephesians 6:1
Paul speaks directly to children and youth asking them to obey their parents. It refers to any child who still lives in the family and under the guidance of the parents, without a particular age limit.
Specifically, it means that children and young people must submit to their parents, learn to respect and take their authority seriously. Obeying implies a willingness to listen and put into practice the will and instructions of the parents.
Obedience to parents is part of honoring the mother and father as required in the Ten Commandments. Paul urges children and young people to obey their parents "in everything." However, the core of this statement is not to teach that children and young people should be little slaves of their parents, but their function is to recognize the authority of mom and dad in their lives.
Honor thy father and thy mother, that thy days may be long in the land which Jehovah thy God giveth thee.
Exodus 20:12
And it does not matter if the parents are believers or not. The only limitation is when parents (believers or not) require something contrary to the will of God. Why is this obedience so central? "Because this is pleasing to the Lord."
Jesus himself was an example. Jesus was obedient to his Father in everything, even when God asked him to die for us on the cross. If you have learned to submit to your parents, you can also submit more easily to Jesus Christ, recognizing him as the Lord of your life.
Unfortunately we know that even parents are not perfect. It also happens to them to make mistakes and, sometimes, make decisions that are unhappy. Maybe your parents have demanded too much, have neglected you, used favoritism towards your brothers, were absent, did not give you the love you would have wanted ...
Our parents' mistakes can affect our lives and can also have consequences that we will carry throughout our lives. They can lead us to be afflicted against them and blame them for circumstances of our life. But if you trust Jesus Christ, then remember that he died on the cross to remove these burdens.
It is not fair to continue reproaching your parents for their mistakes. You are responsible for your life. I know families where parents and children no longer speak, precisely because their children have not been able to forgive their parents. Take your responsibility and face the wounds they have caused you with the help of Jesus Christ.

It is the responsibility of their parents to ask for forgiveness, at least if they are believers, but it is their responsibility as children to forgive them and if it is still possible to reconcile with them. If this is not possible, allow God to at least work in your heart and work so that a process of healing your wounds begins.
Honoring parents implies high esteem, understanding and help. It means being there to take care of them and respect them.
Honoring a mother is so important to God, that I include it as one of the 10 commandments. Exodus 20:12: "Honor your father and your mother, that your days may be long in the land which the LORD your God is giving you."
In Ephesians 6: 1-3 we are told that honoring our father is the first commandment that offers us a reward if we fulfill it: "Children, obey your parents in the Lord, for this is right. Honor your father and your mother, which is the first commandment with promise; so that it may go well with you, and may you be of long life on earth. "
It is necessary to educate our children and young people about the importance of honoring parents, God likes them and for them I add a promise to extend the days on earth for those who do.
God fulfills what he promises.
Beautiful reflection @theonlyway, honoring parents gladdens the heart of God, besides being a commandment with promise
