RE: Grandpa Gotta Eat—Food And Me: A Walk To Remember

in #food6 years ago

That sure did make me hungry again, and I just had fajitas for dinner again. I washed that down with Kombucha, and ate a cookie afterwards... so I would say that's nowhere close to a traditional Mexican dinner. Ha ha.

You know what I could really go for right now? A warm peach pie with a nice scoop of vanilla ice cream on the side! MMMMmmmmmmmm! I may just have to go get some... but where to find it. Maybe I'll make one. Nah, I'll just wait a few more months until the peaches are more in season.

Yeah. Peaches around here usually come on in the latter part of August, although this year, the weather has been warmer so they may already be closer to ripening. It's tough to beat a good peach pie. The problem is, not all peach pie is created equal. I'm sure, though, that if you're making it, you will do it to your own liking.

This is what I managed to snag earlier this evening. I hardly get any ice cream here, so I have to make sure I do it cloak and dagger style.

I'm not a big fan of Heath Bar, but my wife doesn't buy the Rocky Road I like, so I know it wasn't meant for me.

There is a berry cobbler in the freezer that I have yet to get a piece of. I think two others have been baked and eaten without me getting a single bite. It is truly a tragic thing.

No, it doesn't sound authentic at all, but it doesn't have to be if you enjoy it. :)

I don't really discriminate when it comes to ice cream. It's pretty much all good in terms of flavors. The brands can be poor quality, but most flavors are delicious.

That's strange that two cobblers could be baked and eaten without your participation. How's that happen? Are they just hiding them from you?

They're not very large. The first one was eaten while I was sick and didn't have much of an appetite a month or two back. The other I think was baked and taken to a women's church function or activity. I can't remember the exact details, I just know I haven't been able to indulge in the sweet/tart tasty goodness of a mixed berry cobbler.

Ice cream brands are certainly not created equal. I'm surprised my wife is actually bringing home some more expensive ice creams, because she usually buys the store brand which isn't all that great generally, but it's cheap.

Ice cream is ice cream. Not if there's not any ice or cream in it.

I'm sorry you've missed out. Missing it when you're sick is terrible because there's nothing you can do about it. You're in the right place at the right time, but you just don't have the right immune system to handle it at the time.

As far as the women's activity, you couldn't wear a shawl or something? Ha ha. What's grandpa willing to do for cobbler?

Store brand ice cream is definitely not the best, especially the one that comes in the huge five gallon tub. That one is disgusting. I wouldn't even bother with that. That "ice cream" would tarnish the flavor and reputation of all other things that are named the same. I think it should be illegal for them to call those tubs ice cream.

I can't really even do Bryers or Dryers. They both taste off to me. Give me a nice Tillamook! Or maybe a small batch local ice cream. I don't mind what flavor it is, but brand does matter with ice cream.

Well, see, Tillamook is local for me. So is Umpqua. We do make some pretty decent ice cream out here. I keep forgetting how widespread they can get with the Breyers and the Dryers and Ben and Jerry's ice cream giant. It's good to know they're making the rounds, though. :)

I understand about the five gallon tub, but have you ever seen anything other than vanilla, a chocolate, or a cosmopolitan ice cream in any of those? I mean, I don't see rocky road in those tubs, or a praline pecan or like a marionberry. It's always the most basic. And it's more apt to be cosmopolitan because you get three flavors in one. If you don't like one, scoop something else! And then everything tastes off because they're all sitting in the same tub.

It's kind of hard to beat a five gallon tub if you're having any kind of a large gathering—birthday party, barbecue, etc. You could spend a small fortune on ice cream otherwise.

"Honey! Haul out the big five gallon tub of cosmopolitan!"

"But that stuff is gross."

"I know. It's for the guests."

I actually like Baskin Robbin ice cream, but the one we had locally got shut down and so there's a local ice cream shop in it's place. It's okay, too, but I'm not really noticing that much of a difference when I go in between what was there and what's there now, except the waffle cones these new guys produce are smaller in circumference and not nearly as tasty.

I'm not as big of a fan of Umpqua, although I have had it before. I like the Tillamook consistency better for some reason. I can't really explain it.

I've only ever seen those three flavors in the jugs. Never strawberry on its own. Always in the cosmopolitan. I never really cared for any of those.

If you're having a bunch of guests over, then you have to plan ahead so you can get the other stuff on sale and then stock it in your freezer. Then you'll be prepared. Plus side: if they don't show, you'll have lots of good ice cream to eat on your own! :)
