Coin of the Day 11-13-18

Today's token is from Clines Corner in New Mexico. There are various different designs for this token. This one has a roadrunner on it.

This side has a person sitting back against a cactus. Hopefully they removed the needles before taking a break. Otherwise, I can't see resting against a cactus as being very restful.

Interestingly enough, the name of the location is actually "Clines Corners." It's plural. However this token missed that part. The token I found listed on Numista did have it properly named.

There's a travel center at Clines Corners. You can see their website here. I checked for cool coins or tokens, but didn't see any last I looked.

So very cool! I have been looking at road runners for a special reason. That one is just awesome!

Glad you liked it. I'd like it even better if it came in a silver version, but I'll take what I can get. It's still a cool design. Thanks for stopping by!

Yes, it's "Clines Corners." Plural. I couldn't believe it when I saw the name go by in my feed. I couldn't believe anybody who doesn't live here ever heard of the place. It's pretty close to where I live in NM -- otherwise, I'd have never heard of it either.

Wow, that's really funny! I had to look it up on the map to see where it was. How serendipitous that you live so close to it. Have you even been through there? Do they still sell tokens of any sort?

Clines Corners is about 25 miles from where I live -- and is literally the definition of a "tourist trap." There is a huge building connected to a gas station, a 7/11 type store and a Subway fast food restaurant.

Inside the building are all kinds of cheap souvenir stuff from fake Indian pottery and figurines to rubber tomahawks. I've heard the people there are extremely friendly and accommodating. They also sell homemade candy and snacks.

There's even a small RV park for overnight visitors. But I haven't been there in decades. I'm usually going west to Albuquerque or north to Santa Fe when I'm driving and Clines Corners is way in the wrong direction.

I hear it mentioned and see the name on the weather maps when I watch the local news broadcasts. And they very well might sell tokens there (Heck, why not, if there's a buck to be made in it?) -- but believe me, it's strictly a gimmick!

Have a look at the map there at the top of their website link ---> (Scroll down a bit.)

See Clines Corners there in the middle? I live about 1/4 of the way up the road going North from Estancia. (See ... slightly South and West of Clines Corners. Estancia is so tiny the mom-and-pop grocery store there closed a few years back. But even Estancia is bigger than Clines Corners.)

One of these days, @themanwithnoname, I need to take Route 66. Even after its popularity has long since waned, I hear about it or something along its path.

I'm wondering about a couple of things now, thanks to the 's' missing on corner. One, why did no one who knew the name of the place proof the coin? Once it's on the coin, you can't really edit it.

The other thing is, why is it Clines? The guy who founded it was named Cline. Shouldn't Cline show possession, such as in Cline's? And why Corners? I guess if I went there I could tell whether or not the place took up more than one corner.

I don't know. Too many mysteries. Not enough time to solve them. :)

I've never traveled the whole thing either, so I probably should as well.

I don't know how they missed that. It seems like something that you would want to check before you minted a token in its honor.

I don't know who or what Clines is. The title isn't possessive, so it leads me to believe that there are multiples of Clive, whatever that is.

Yeah, there are so many mysteries in life to solve. Good luck!

Wow! You have a little something for everyone with regards to the types of tokens you share. Haha!

Yeah, there's a good mix. :)
