Trip Down Memory Lane - Peter Sarstedt
Time to take a break from Italy and indulge in a little bit of musical memories. The lyrics to a Peter Sarstedt number were running around my head this morning, and as you all know the only way to get rid of these repeating sounds is to listen to the track in full.
Peter Sarstedt was a British musician who played what I like to call ‘folk pop’ although he was known more as a ‘pop artist’
Born in Delhi, India in 1941 Peter’s parents were both classically trained musicians although when in India they were working on a tea plantation. The family returned to the UK in 1954 and the Sarstedt brothers started playing ‘skiffle music’, a genre with jazz, blues and folk roots usually using homemade instruments.
Where do you go to my lovely - Peter Sarstedt (1969)
Although he had a few Top 40 singles the one he is best known for is Where Do you go to my Lovely which he released in 1969 and it made it to number one in seven countries and remains his biggest hit.
However as kids we used to love his lesser known but almost ‘cult status’ song called Take Off Your Clothes, conjuring up salacious images in the mind of us hormone ravished teenage boys…
Take off Your Clothes - Peter Sarstedt (1969)
Take off your clothes
Let me see what it is that your hiding
And don't look so shocked
You have nothing to fear from my eyes
Ha ha ha
My daddy, is a priest you know
And I am, not a beast you know
I just, want to, look
I just, want to look
So take off your clothes
And stand naked as nature intended
And I'll take off mine
Just to show you that I'm in good faith
My daddy, is a priest you know
And I am, not a beast you know
I just, want to, look
Yes I, just, want to look
Well now you can see
That it isn't, as bad as all that
So lie on the bed
And I'll talk of my unhappy childhood, oh
My daddy, is the pope you know
And I just want to grope you know
No, I just want to love
Yes I just want to love
Well it will not hurt you
I promise you that cross my heart
The first time is always the best
You can ask anybody, ask your mother
My daddy, is a priest you know
And I am, not a beast you know
I just, want to, fff-eel
I just, want to, fff-eel
Well how can you say
That I brought you here just for one purpose ha
There's thousands of girls I could get
If I just wanted that - yes there are
My daddy, is a priest you know
And I am, not a beast you know
I just, want to love, haw haw
I just, a want to love
Well how does it feel
Now that you are no longer a maiden
What do you mean? You want more?
And you want it right now? - oh my god!
My daddy, is a priest you know
And I am, not a beast you know
I just, want to sleep, yes
I just, want to sleep
Take off your clothes
Let me see what it is that your hiding, yeah
And don't look so shocked
You have nothing to fear from my eyes...boring

You get the idea why it was a cassette tape which was past from grubby boy hand to grubby boy hand?
So, to assist me in getting another Italy post done I shall finish with a minor hit of his which touches on a subject I have been writing about for a while now….. I am a Cathedral or as they say in Italy …sono una cattedrale
