Global Village Indeed - Awe inspiring stuff!

in #technology7 years ago

Having worked in the Information Technology space for almost four decades, and seen transformation and technological advances which actually beggar belief I am still gobsmacked when I read something like the following:-

As an open source project, it seemed logical to run the hackathon entirely out in the open on GitHub. where teams both registered and submitted their code.
The open collaboration meant that teams could compete from all around the world — We held the Kickoff with a livestream on YouTube. At 7:45am in San Francisco, it was 3:45pm in London, 10:45pm in Shanghai. Throughout the week, most of the teams were on the Status Slack on our #hackathon channel. Hackathon participants and Status core developers worked together hashing out ways to improve the experimental Status API, and better understand the type of features developers need when building decentralized applications (DApps).
The teams built their DApps using web languages. Through the magic of React Native, DApps run silky-smooth on iOS and Android. Some teams dove into the smart contract language behind Ethereum, Solidity. Other teams wrote message chatbots with Javascript. And in both cases, they ran entirely on the decentralized web.

Just take a minute to actually focus in on the technology involved in those three paragraphs !! It is insane, well certainly for someone like myself who started as a Cobol programmer writing code on sheets which then needed to be punched onto cards …

And these cards were read through a card machine (I worked on one very similar to the one below.

And these fed into an ICL Mainframe ( ICL1900 george 2 ) … 128 Kb memory capable of running two streams.

The desk with the continuous stationary is the console where the operating instructions are manually entered

Compare that to what was achieved in the Status Hackathon, and that progress in only four decades. Where will the Blockchain take us in the next four decades?

Actually I digress because the purpose of this post was just to highlight how far technology has developed and how these advances are really giving credence to the term ‘Global Village’

Also, just as an aside Status is the first cryptocurrency I have invested in since March when I got involved with QTUM. I really believe there will be a huge uptake over the coming years. We all know the future is mobile, mobile, mobile….not so?

I could tell long stories about my computer industry experiences and this may transpire in the future. But thanks for reading!!

Very informative technology

Thanks for reading ...

Interesting

It is very interesting as a project. I love crypto and technology. Your blog is great. Thank you

Thank you for taking the time to read....

Nice experience sharing
Highly Appreciated

Code on sheets is seemed such fantastic as nowadays technologies would be seemed in several years. Thanks for your post

My dad worked for IBM in the 70/80s
he used to bring back boxes of those cards for us to draw on etc
Then we got a TRS-80. It was soooo advanced! All 16k of it :-)

It was a small industry then, so I am sure I or my sister would know your dad. I only got involved with IBM around 1985, before that was ICL (now Fujitsu). My sister worked at IBM (Sandton) for 36 years from 1983 ...

Toe die klip n geheime wapen was .....

Hahaha.... thanks for the reply.

Wow, 4 decades.. I take it you a bit of experience :P Great post brother, very informative. Ironically we posted our posts at around the same time.. Great minds think alike :)

Just read yours .... very upbeat and full of energy. keep up the tempo and you will do very well here.

Thank you very much. I appreciate your encouragement! The future is exciting for those who work for their freedom :)
